British sailor John Oakeley watched his boat 'Lionheart' being loaded onto a ship for the America's Cup, Southampton, June 13th 1980.

Freedom - an apt name for our times and an iconic 12 metre in America’s Cup history. She was the last design from S&S to defend the cup. Skippered, in the successful 1980 defence of the Auld Mug , by Dennis Conner, it was he who brought in full time two boat testing into the America’s Cup arena. Freedom sits apart from other 12’s of the era with less freeboard. This substantially lowered the centre of gravity of the whole boat and was a key factor in giving Freedom an edge in breezy conditions.
