🦌 HUNTER TRAINING | WEEK 6 RECAP

This week our hunter trainees got hands-on with butchery, with Sam leading a fantastic practical session.

Starting with field dressing, trainees learned how to safely gut, skin, and completely bone out an animal, gaining valuable skills that help ensure every part of the harvest is respected and utilised.

The session also covered what to look for when assessing an animal’s health, including signs of illness, disease or abnormalities that could affect meat quality and suitability for consumption. Understanding these checks is an important part of being an ethical and responsible hunter.

With step-by-step guidance, Sam demonstrated the process from field to freezer, giving trainees the confidence and knowledge to take venison from field to fork and proudly share it with family and friends.

A huge thank you to Sam for sharing his expertise and helping our hunters build essential skills for ethical, responsible, and sustainable hunting.

A great day on the range starts before you even leave home. 🎯

To help everything run smoothly, make sure you’re prepared before arriving:

✅ Register before Thursday midnight
✅ Bring Class 5 Earmuffs for everyone attending
✅ Fit a chamber flag to every fi***rm before leaving your vehicle
✅ Check your vehicle is suitable for the gravel access road and carries a spare tyre

A little preparation means less time at the gate and more time on the firing line.

We want your range day to be a great experience, so take a few minutes to check you’ve got everything sorted before heading out.

See you on the range! 🔥

🦌 HUNTER TRAINING | WEEK 5 RECAP

This week our Hunter Training participants focused on some of the most important aspects of ethical hunting: understanding New Zealand’s big game species, how and where to hunt them and effective shot placement.

The evening covered:

• Identifying New Zealand’s big game animals and understanding their behaviour including animal sign
• Hunting ethics and techniques
• Species-specific hunting considerations
• Vital zones and ethical shot placement
• Hunting at different times of the year
• Making responsible decisions before taking a shot

A well-placed shot is one of the most important responsibilities of every hunter. Understanding animal anatomy, knowing your effective range, and recognising when not to take a shot are key skills that help ensure humane and ethical harvests.

A huge thank you to Sam for sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of hunters.
