TTT Finals Day

A great result for us last Sunday as we concluded the Auckland Time Trial Series. In windy conditions, Senior A were only 7 seconds off 1st place. Junior A comfortably claimed 1st continuing their dominance in this racing format while Junior B gained an extremely pleasing 4th.

The College Sport prizegiving also celebrated the series results. Again, Junior A were placed 1st while Senior A gained 3rd place overall. It has been extremely satisfying to note considerable improvement across the Westlake teams.

We now turn our attention to individual events (Hill Climb, Road Race, Criterium & Individual Time Trials). The next month provides plenty of racing opportunity for the boys with the Nationals as our pinnacle event at Palmerston North in the holidays.

Junior B claim 3rd while Senior A claim 1st

The 4th Team Time Trial of the season was noteworthy for our Westlake riders. Despite the challenging weather on the Northshore last Sunday, the morning at Pukekohe wasn’t too miserable. We were expecting to be racing in wet and windy conditions but we were instead treated to generally overcast skies with a light breeze.

Junior A’s formidable record of 12 wins in a row over the last couple of seasons finally came to an end. That record included a couple of North Island and a National gold. Ethan Rawson, Joash Murray, Theo Lloyd and Callum Sewell had the misfortune of a minor crash, a mechanical and a dropped rider to derail their race.

While it wasn’t Junior A’s day, by contrast, our Junior B claimed their best result of the season placing 3rd for TTT4. Narin Em Ream, Daniel Dickson, Luca James and Grayson deserve to be very proud of that result. Another season’s best was achieved by Senior A (Marcus Hilder, Ashton Sinclair, Blake Jeffery, Cam Gordon, Borynt Em Ream). This team has regularly been on the podium but it was our first 1st for the current season.

We have an exciting term ahead of us. Last Sunday’s results, on top of claiming the Top Boys School award in the North Islands at the start of the July holidays, gives us great confidence going forward. Along with the remaining TTTs we have the individual events in the Northern Tour and Nationals at the end of the term to keep us motivated (even on the very cold mornings we’ve been encountering this week).

Half way through our season and we are delighted to announce we gained Top Boys School at the N Islands. A very close competition with only a couple of points between the top 3 schools.

Many Old Boys will enjoy this photo, no doubt it'll bring back fond memories of the N I crit course.

We now head back to Pukekohe for TTT4. An exciting 2nd half with TTT, Northern Tour and of course Nationals.

TTT3 – Junior A claim their 11th consecutive 1st.

Racing moved from the traditional circuit at Pukekohe Park to the road at Otaua last weekend. A new course on an open road presents many new challenges. Challenging too was the wind on the course. Furthermore, the boys had to master two turnaround cones at either end of the course.

Despite these changes the WBHS teams continued their great form. The Senior A squad (Borynt Em Ream, Ashton Sinclair, Ethan Bowen, Blake Jeffery, Joshua Blayney) claimed another podium crossing the line in the 3rd fastest time. Joash Murray was welcomed back to the Junior A team following his injury. Junior A (Joash Murray, Ethan Rawson, Seth Bird, Theo Lloyd) was dominant. They won by an impressive 1 ½ minutes last Sunday.

The WBHS Junior A team has now raced and won 11 consecutive team time trials. They won every TTT in 2025, including the North Islands and Nationals and have claimed 1st for the first three TTTs in the College Sport series this season. It is a remarkable achievement.

There was certainly a lot of learning in TTT3. While we celebrate the record being established by Junior A, they also had to overcome some mishaps. The greatest learning was perhaps noted in the Junior C and Senior D squads through encountering windy conditions on a narrow road. Such experiences are invaluable as we prepare for the North Islands at the end of the term in Cambridge. Before that, however, the boys return to Pukekohe to compete in the individual Points Race.

TTT2 - Juniors claim1st while Seniors pick up 2nd equal.

Sunday the 17th of May started off with a crisp early morning drive down to Pukekohe racetrack for our cyclists for the second team time trial of the season, lots of layers all around with winter incoming.

Huge support from our parents, teachers, and coaches that came along helping with warmup and setup before our teams were racing. Teams completed 6 laps of the course, 16km total trying to get the fastest time against other teams while also battling the cold and slight winds.

Our senior A team made up of Ashton Sinclair, Blake Jeffery, Ethan Bowen, Joshua Blaney, and Borynt Em Ream made away with 2nd tied exactly with Auckland Grammar. The new aero helmets proving their worth. The strength of our senior B team proven, with them coming 5th, the fastest B team out of all the schools.

Our junior A team of Ethan Rawson, Narin Em Ream, Seth Bird, and Theo Lloyd came away with a clean first place, alongside junior B and C who greatly improved their times from the last race, a great effort overall. Great work for all the boys out there last weekend.

Congratulations also to Harry Shannon who is currently racing in Europe. While it’s a major achievement to simply be able to race on the European circuit, we were delighted to see Harry win the Tour of Torhout. A sensational result. Good luck to Ashton Sinclair too as he travels to Australia this weekend to race the Tour of Canberra.

TTT racing begins (Senior A 3rd & Junior A 1st)

We had a fantastic start to our 2026 season last weekend at Pukekohe. Despite fielding a team of Y11 & 12 riders, our Senior A boys claimed 3rd spot (Ashton Sinclair, Blake Jeffery, Joshua Blayney, Ethan Bowen & Cam Gordon). Well done to Cam as he joins an exclusive group of boys who have raced Senior A as a Y 11 student.

Many of those Senior A boys raced in the formidable Junior A squad last year. Only Ethan Rawson remained as a Junior from last year’s squad. We were delighted with Junior A’s performance in TTT1 claiming 1st place. Ethan was joined by Seth Bird, Theo Lloyd and Daniel Dickson.

Some other great results were recorded across the club with our B teams looking very competitive. Well done in particular to all the new riders for racing their first TTT for Westlake. It is very promising and gives us a lot of confidence for the 2026 season.

Many thanks to all the parents for their ongoing support. We have parents assisting with marshalling, towing trailers, putting up marquees, running bbqs, providing food, taking photos, managing teams, driving follow cars, riding … the list is endless and we are very grateful.

Finally, we wish Harry Shannon and Marcus Hilder the very best with their exciting European campaigns. While Harry has only been in Europe for a week he has already had a sensational result racing in the Czech Republic.

It’s been some time since our last Facebook post. While we’ve had a break here it’s clear that the boys have been busy over the summer with some impressive form being shown at training camp last weekend.

Always a highlight, Cambridge turned on the weather to allow us to enjoy 3 solid days of riding. Back by popular demand, the ITT gave us some excellent data. Many of the boys delighted in the huge gains they have made when comparing to their ITTs from previous years.

Camp is a fantastic opportunity for us to welcome the new boys. Great to see the fleet of Meridas out and clocking up the kms. For the vast majority of the new boys this was all very new with many not having ridden any significant distance. Not only did they master important skills, have a go on the velodrome but they all conquered the gruelling Maungakawa climb. We are enormously grateful to EC Cycles in Northcote for their ongoing support of our programme. They were under some pressure to service, allocate and fit the school bikes.

Similarly, we are grateful to the many old boys that so generously assist at camp. This talented bunch of guys includes a number of NZ title holders. At the velodrome we were fortunate to have a visit from old boy Luke Blackwood. While through the camp, Andrew, Liam, Matthew, Matt & Arthur all willingly sacrificed time to help the 2026 squad and ensure a successful camp.

Traditionally we announce our captain at camp. We did so again but this time on the summit of Maungakawa. Congratulations Borynt Em Ream on your appointment as captain for 2026. We know you will do a fantastic job and will be well supported by the other boys in this role.

We do encourage full attendance at camp as we realise it’s significance to our programme. A couple of boys had very legitimate excuses as they were away racing. Ethan Rawson (WBHS Junior Sportsman of 2025) claimed 2nd at the National MTB cross country championships in Rotorua. Racing as one of the younger riders in his age group, this is yet another formidable achievement.

Formidable too was Harry Shannon’s achievement in Australia. Harry claimed 1st place in the General Classification of the Q Tour (Tour of Queensland) for U19 riders. This race involves 3 stages and attracts the best riders from Australia. Congratulations Harry, yet another stunning achievement.
