Geeta Iyengar, the eldest daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar, formally started teaching in 1961. During her youth, she prepared her sisters and fellow schoolgirls for inter-school yoga competitions before her father’s seminal book Light on Yoga was published. She went on to pioneer yoga specifically for women.

After graduating from high school in 1961, she quickly stepped in to teach classes for her father while he was away on international tours. Teaching female students ranging from 7 to 80 years old shaped her experiential knowledge, leading her to adapt the Iyengar method to the physical requirements of women across all stages of life, including menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

She detailed her groundbreaking work for women's wellness in her 1983 book, Yoga: A Gem for Women.

Geeta Iyengar eventually became the co-director of the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, where she continued to teach and mentor students until her passing in 2018.

Heading south for a weekend of practice with the level 2 teachers Yoga Tree Taupo.
The focus practicing different asanas balancing on our arms, with the mountain and lake as a back drop, an ideal winter practice.
