Nulook U26 5-a-side: North Harbour's first invite to this prestigious national event.
The weekend of August 22 & 23 August, North Harbour's youngest representatives travelled to Wellington and did the centre proud as they rose to the challenge and faced off against the best of the country's next generation of bowlers.
The team demonstrated a high standard of play, great sportsmanship, and proved that North Harbour’s u26 team is one to keep your eyes on in the future.
The experience and steady nature of the Barracudas’ Kyson Buchan was pivotal to the side's successthis weekend. His game changing shots and encouraging nature made him his teammates’ biggest supporters on the green and off. Browns Bay’s Max Yates provided a steady backbone to the triples and fours combinations. Max also went deep into the Super Singles Shootout, finishing 2nd equal in the Shanghai Singles consolation format. The pair made a formidable combination as a three and skip, despite both only being 13 years old and competing against combinations a decade older and far more experienced.
Hobsonville's Youth Program graduates Jeremy and Jasmine were among the newest and youngest competitors in the field. Alongside Liam in the Pairs, Jeremy faced the reigning champs in the very first round. Despite the nerves, the pair held their own against a strong Canterbury side, with the final score not truly reflecting the quality of their bowls.
Jasmine was another player who overcame her nerves and performed well beyond her level of experience. She remained a steady force throughout the tournament, consistently setting up the head well before pulling all the stops out in the final triples game against Gisborne, playing a key role in a remarkable comeback victory.
The management team unanimously agreed that the stand out player of the weekend was none other than Sunnybrae's Liam Staines. The now 19 year old (who celebrated his birthday over the weekend with the team) recorded two outstanding victories; one against Wairarapa's Taui White and the other against Gisborne in the pairs, where he skipped fellow team mate Ryan in a remarkable display of composure and leadership.
Last but not certainly not least, a special mention goes to Ryan Hill for making himself available as our super sub. He slotted in wherever needed and was the ultimate team player, ensuring his youngest teammates felt supported and confident whenever they took to the green.
A big congratulations to the comp winners, Nulook Nomads for taking out the U26 5-A-Side National title.
Overall, it was an incredibly well run tournament thanks to Blake and his team from Bowls Wellington. To all the players, you deserve a special shout out. You are the next generation of bowlers and we could not be more proud to witness the comradery, sportsmanship (win or lose) and pure class on display. Bring on next year!!

Following on from the Canoe and Campi competitions on the weekend 15 & 16 August, our 1 to 5 year bowlers are taking on teams from across Auckland district in the ABCA Cup this Saturday, 22nd August 2026.
What is the the ABCA Cup? It is a one-day optional fours tournament that celebrates unity, development, and the rich legacy of junior bowls coaching in Auckland. Hosted at Howick and Pakuranga Bowling Clubs, the ABCA Cup brings together male and female junior bowlers from across the winter coaching programme, forming zone teams that reflect collaboration and shared growth. This event is more than just a finale — it’s a tribute to the enduring impact of the Auckland Bowling Coaches Association (now Bowls Auckland Coaches Committee), whose work laid the foundations for the junior development pathway we see today.
Congratulations and good bowling to our two teams of players who put their names forward to take part.
Our two teams are:
Ann Yearbury - Bowls Orewa
Kay Hewitt - Bowls Orewa
Jerome Kwok -Northcote
Peter Russell - Waimauku
Heather Speedy - Hobsonville
Louise Stewart - Bowls Orewa

Todd Robertson - Warkworth
Both Bowls North Harbour teams are playing at the Pakuranga Bowling Club situated in Lord Elsmore Park.

ABCA CUP - Bowls Auckland Following the spirited competition of the Campi and Canoe events, the spotlight shifts to the ABCA Cup — a one-day optional fours tournament that celebrates unity, development, and the rich legacy of junior bowls coaching in Auckland.

The weekend of the 15th and16th August, Bowls Auckland held their annual Canoe Cup & Campi competitions for the bowlers in the first 5 years of bowling experience.
These are very prestigious events with a lot of history and are regarded as the pinnacle for junior bowlers. Bowls North Harbour were invited to participate and we selected 3 men's teams and 3 women's from our Winter Coaching Clinic held at Orewa during July.
The Canoe is the men's fours and was held at the Bridge Park Bowling Club with teams from Counties Manakau and North Harbour and Auckland .
Day one qualifying top 8 teams advancing to the post section for the Canoe Cup.
The Gary Cuff skipped 4 only just missing out on ends differential, finishing with 3 wins from 4.The other 2 teams also preformed very well, in fact only 3 losses out of the 12 games played.
Day 2 a new day and different conditions with a cold southerly freshening during the day and the prospect of hail in the afternoon. The guys once again showed that they were putting their skills learnt at our coaching clinic to use, and while there were some problems adapting to the conditions, all and all a very gutsy effort considering that more than half the squad were in their 1st year or less, and was their first time competing in a 2 day competition.
The Epsom Bowling Club played host to this year’s Campi—the women’s triples event—drawing 29 talented teams from across all of Auckland.
Top Qualifiers: Louise Stewart, Kay Hewitt, and Daphne Davies delivered a sensational Saturday performance, standing out as the only team in the entire 29-team field to sweep all four qualifying rounds. Securing the #1 seed was a magnificent performance and a proud first for Bowls North Harbour!
Bowls North Harbour's two additional teams put on strong performances of their own, securing two victories out of four matches to qualify comfortably for day two.
Championship Division: Competing in the top 8 for the prestigious Campi trophy, Louise’s trio carried their momentum into Sunday with a victory in round one. Facing a star-studded lineup of Auckland champions and representative players in round two, they played with grit and determination. They battled right to the finish line in their final match, missing out by a mere three shots while maintaining brilliant team spirit throughout.
Consolation Division Success: Completing a demanding four-game Sunday, the remaining two teams showcased steady determination, placing 13th and 15th out of 22 teams in a highly competitive consolation event.
Every match provided valuable experience, and all three teams represented Bowls North Harbour with outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and pride across the entire weekend!
Many thanks to Bowls Auckland and to the Bridge Park Bowling Club and the Epsom Bowling Club for running a terrific tournament and to our junior 1-5 players for stepping into their first Canoe Cup & Campi competitions.
Massive thanks also to our team captains Laurie Kean and Greg Taylor. Your support throughout the buildup to the events and during the event weekend was very much appreciated. Thanks also to the Bowls North Harbour bowlers who made it along to observe and support the teams.
