Headaches and Migraines: What's Really Going On β€” and How to Get Relief in East Auckland Headaches are one of the most common β€” and most misunderstood β€” complaints we see in clinic. Whether you're dealing with tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches that start in the neck, or full-blown migraines, there's almost always a treatable cause behind them. A reminder for parents, coaches, and young athletes.

Recently, Sonny Bill Williams shared that he's preparing for his fourth neck surgery

While most young athletes won't reach the professional ranks, his story highlights something important: sport places real physical demands on the body.

Today, many young athletes are balancing school sport, club sport, representative teams, extra trainings, gym sessions, and competitions. That's a lot of stress on bodies that are still growing, developing, and adapting.

Being young doesn't make someone invincible.

Recovery is not a reward. It's part of the training process.

Young athletes need:
βœ… Quality sleep
βœ… Good programming and appropriate training loads
βœ… Regular rest and recovery days
βœ… Nutrient-dense whole foods
βœ… Strength and conditioning that matches their stage of development
βœ… Support from healthcare professionals when needed, including chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, sports doctors, and massage therapists

Too often I hear:

They're young, they'll be fine.

Maybe they will.

But recurring injuries, persistent aches, fatigue, burnout, and reduced enjoyment of sport often tell a different story.

As a sports chiropractor, I've been fortunate to work with athletes from school level through to the international stage. One thing remains true at every level: performance improves when recovery is valued.

Let's stop glorifying how much our kids can push through and start focusing on how well they recover.

Our goal shouldn't just be creating better athletes.

It should be creating healthier, more resilient young people who can enjoy sport for life.

Take care of our kids. Their future health is worth it.

What are your thoughts? Are young athletes playing too much, too little, or about right?

"How many acupuncture treatments will I need?"

The answer depends on your goals, symptoms, and how long you've been dealing with the issue.

🌿 Acute problems often respond best to more frequent care initially.
🌿 Chronic conditions may require a longer treatment plan to create lasting change.
🌿 Once symptoms improve, many people choose maintenance treatments to help stay well and prevent flare-ups.

At your first appointment, Annie will take the time to understand your health history, assess your concerns, and create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

There is no one-size-fits-all approachβ€”your care is designed around your individual needs and goals.

🦴 Daily flossing for your joints.

Most people think of flossing as something you do for your teeth. I think your joints need it too.

Winter has a way of slowing us down. We sit more, move less, and before long our bodies start feeling stiff, tight, and achy.

Simple movements like:
βœ… Squat and rotation combinations
βœ… Bridges
βœ… Spinal flexion, extension and rotation
βœ… Getting up and down from the floor without using your hands

help keep your joints moving through their available ranges and remind your body that movement is medicine.

You don't need an hour-long workout. Just a few minutes of intentional movement each day can help reduce stiffness, improve mobility, and keep you feeling younger and more capable.

Motion is lotion.

Don't let winter turn you into a statue. Get moving. Your spine and joints will thank you.
