One of my clients, Jo, is a cardiology nurse practitioner. Her whole job is telling people what to eat and how to move.

For years, she couldn't get her own body to cooperate with any of it.

Here's the line that's stuck with me since: "I do seem to be more successful if I have that attachment to someone else, where you're accountable, rather than just to myself. I can always tell myself a whole lot of stories, even though they might not be quite correct."

I think about that a lot... A woman trained to spot when someone's fooling themselves was doing exactly that, to herself, and nobody was around to catch it.

What actually shifted things wasn't a new meal plan. It was someone in her corner asking the follow-up question when she tried to coast.

Three months of that, and she was 6.2kg lighter, 17cm smaller round her waist and hips, sleeping properly for the first time in years, and back in clothes she'd written off.

Her words, not mine: "I would not have been able to do that on my own."

Your sugar cravings are not a discipline problem, They’re a signal.

And most of the time, the signal has nothing to do with sugar.

Here are five things quietly driving your cravings every day…

Dehydration 💧 Your body mistakes thirst for hunger more often than you think. Drink 500ml of water and wait 15 minutes. It sounds too simple, but it works.

Skipping meals 🍽️ Go too long without eating and blood sugar drops fast. Insulin surges. At that point willpower has no chance. Eat within 1-2 hours of waking, and don’t forget lunch.

Hormonal shifts 🍫 Whether you still have a cycle or not, fluctuating hormones affect serotonin directly… and serotonin drives sugar cravings

Artificial sweeteners 🍬 Diet products often make cravings worse. Sweet taste without calories confuses your brain, and it keeps looking for the real thing.

She called herself a “frumpy invisible failure.”

For everyone who still wants to bake but also wants to feel good about what they’re eating.

You don’t have to choose.

→ Almond meal instead of regular flour. Naturally gluten free, higher in protein. Gives baked goods this beautiful dense, moist texture. Works so well in bliss balls, slices, muffins.

→ Coconut flour. A little goes a long way, it’s very absorbent, so you use far less than regular flour. Gluten free, higher in fibre, and it adds a subtle natural sweetness.

→ Flaxseed or linseed meal. So underrated. Adds fibre, omega 3s, and works as a binding agent so it can replace eggs in some recipes. Great for gut health too.

The goal? Higher protein, more fibre, more satiating. So you have the slice... and you’re actually full.

You’re not going back for three more pieces because your body got something real from it.

And I used to think that wasn’t enough.
That if I couldn’t do it properly, I shouldn’t bother.

Skip the workout because there’s only 20 minutes.
Abandon the day’s eating because lunch wasn’t perfect.
