Balmoral Bowling Club

Another excellent day at Browns Bay BC to battle for "the Bone" was had on Saturday. Despite a strong finish by the Balmoral combinations, it wasn't enough to overcome the lead Browns Bay built in the earlier rounds. Browns Bay retain the Bone of Contention with a 12.5 to 8.5 games win.
Best Balmoral Team on the day with 3 wins was Michelle, Steve.K. and Marianne.

The Bone of Contention

It is not by any measure the prettiest trophy to win, but it is an enduring symbol of the bond between Balmoral BC and Browns Bay BC.

The story has it that when Browns Bay BC was being established, members from Balmoral BC travelled over and assisted with the groundworks in the spirit of sporting camaraderie. During these works, this large bone thought to be from a bullock was unearthed and was in turn made into the trophy that both clubs compete for in the annual Bone of Contention challenge.
This week the clubs will meet again to decide who gets to hold "the Bone" for the coming season.

Additionally, the 1945-46 BBBC President Syd Mullinger penned a short ode which is recited before play.

Great work from all the Balmoral players in the Canoe and Campi… On the back of Guys result great effort from Katy and her team who just missed winning the Campi- on the last end.

Great to see our Balmoral Junior bowlers putting all their new found knowledge from Winter Coaching into competitive practise in the Canoe and Campi competitions. It is with great sadness that the Balmoral Bowling Club advises the passing of Ian Hughes. “Mr Reliable”, steady on the greens and off. Ian, a skilful playing member for 11 years, he also quickly stepped up to volunteer on the Club Board and then in short order took on the role of Secretary, whose duties he discharged with diligence, excellence and an eye for detail.
Ian has been one of the mainstays of the club's operations, quietly and efficiently working behind the scenes, running rollups and winter cards, working on the bar, and always there to support the club.
He will be greatly missed by all. RIP Ian.

Ian’s funeral will be at Davis Funeral Services, Grange Manor , 400 Dominion Road, on Wednesday 15th July 2026 at 10.30 am, followed by drinks at Balmoral Bowling Club. Please wear Club Shirts.

6 weeks of enthusiasm, learning and improvement comes to a close with the last session of the club's winter coaching. Thanks for all the support and we coaches are already planning some in-season sessions to keep up the progress.
