All for this feeling.
The high-five after a hard lap. The first time they let go and float. The grin when they realise they just did the thing that scared them last week.
We can talk technique and structure all day, and we do, but this is what it’s actually about.

“What do you love most about being a swim coach” 🩵

You’ve met Coach Josh. Now swipe to see him in action.
Caught mid-lesson, mid-correction, mid-laugh - a normal morning in his lane. Firm when it counts, fun when it helps, and locked in on the small details that make a stroke click.
“That eureka moment.”
Ask any swim coach, and they’ll probably tell you the same thing - there’s no better feeling than seeing that moment when everything suddenly clicks.
Here’s Josh talking about it so candidly and passionately - five years in, and that feeling still hasn’t worn off.
You watch a swimmer. You give them feedback. It doesn’t quite stick. So you rephrase it, try a different cue, explain it another way.
Then all of a sudden, something clicks.
That’s the magic of coaching!

SwimTastic Skills | The Float
The first thing we teach isn’t how to swim. It’s how to float.
Before the freestyle arms, before the kicking, before any of it - we teach a swimmer to lie back, stay calm, and trust the water to hold them. The back float looks simple.
It’s one of the hardest things for a nervous swimmer to learn, because it asks them to stop fighting and let go.
We teach it early, and we teach it patiently, because it’s the skill everything else is built on. A swimmer who can roll onto their back and breathe has a way to rest, and a way to stay calm in the water.
Fewer than 1 in 3 New Zealand 10-year-olds can keep themselves afloat for two minutes. That’s exactly why we start here.

Some swimmers are ready to go deeper into one part of their swimming. That’s what our holiday clinics are for.
These school holidays we’re running focused clinics in Breaststroke, Butterfly, Dive, and Turns.
Each is a 40-minute session built around a single skill, so swimmers have time to really work on it rather than just touch on it. For Bronze level and up, we only run them over the holidays.
Running during the July school holidays (6–9 and 13–16 July). If your swimmer’s keen to sharpen a stroke or skill, this is the time to do it. The booking link’s in our bio.

Winter break is nearly here - and the SwimTastic pool stays warm.
Our holiday programme runs in Monday-to-Thursday blocks, with a 30-minute class each day. Four days in a row makes a real difference: skills settle faster, and swimmers come out the other side more confident in the water. All levels welcome, and there’s plenty of fun in it too.
Running across the July school holidays: Monday- Thursday, 6–9 July and 13–16 July.
Spots fill up faster over the break. If you’d like your swimmer in the water with us, the link’s in our bio.
We asked Josh how he handles nerves on the pool deck, and this story sums it up pretty well.
Nerves are a completely normal part of learning to swim. Some kids feel them in their first lesson, while others might suddenly lose confidence after months or even years in the water.
When that happens, there’s no magic fix.
It’s about taking the time, staying patient, holding their hand when they need it, talking them through it, and giving plenty of encouragement along the way.
Progress doesn’t always happen in one lesson.
Sometimes it takes time, trust, and a lot of small wins.
But seeing a child work through those nerves and come out the other side with more confidence makes every step worth it.
