As we count down to another NZ Junior Nationals, it's the perfect time to look back at one of the great moments in the event's history.

In 1989, Glen Wilson defeated Wayne Werder in the final of the Under-19 division, earning his place on a trophy that has been claimed by some of New Zealand's finest players over the decades.

The NZ Junior Championships have long been a proving ground for future stars. Many of the names engraved on those honours boards went on to achieve success at national and international level, making the U19 title one of the most prestigious junior crowns in New Zealand sport.

Every year brings a new group of talented young players chasing the same dream – to join the list of champions who came before them. From past legends to today's rising stars, the Junior Nationals continue to showcase the future of our game.

As this year's competitors prepare to take the court, spare a thought for those memorable battles of the past – including that 1989 final between Glen Wilson and Wayne Werder. Great champions, great matches, and a reminder of the rich history behind this event.

📣 G.J. Gardner Junior Inter-district Teams Announced! 🏆

Congratulations to all players selected to represent their districts in this year's G.J. Gardner Junior Inter-district Teams Competition. We can't wait to see the talent, sportsmanship, and district pride on display throughout the event.

This year, we're adding an extra layer of excitement through the Rally28 World Squash Day initiative by splitting participating districts into Team All Stars and Team Superstars.

Each district has been assigned to one of these two international teams, and we will be tracking the results of any district match-ups where a Team All Stars district takes on a Team Superstars district. Those results will contribute to the global Rally28 match tally, helping determine which team comes out on top worldwide!

This means every inter-district clash could have an impact not only on local bragging rights, but also on an international challenge connecting squash communities around the world.

Find out more about the Rally28 World Squash Day initiative here: https://rally28squash.com/wsd/

👏 Best of luck to all players, coaches, managers, and supporters. Play hard, support your teammates, and let's show the strength of New Zealand junior squash both on and off the court!

🌟 Junior Nationals Spotlight: Maximus Mathews 🌟

As we wrap up our GJ Gardner Junior Nationals Junior Spotlight Series, we catch up with one of the country's leading junior players, Maximus Mathews from Whanganui. An A1 player and now in his final year of junior competition, Max heads into Nationals looking to finish his junior career on a high after an outstanding 2025 campaign.

🏆 What's one squash event you'd love to compete in someday?

World Champs, because that's the most prestigious squash event in the world, where the best squash players go to play off for one title.

🎯 What is your goal for Junior Nationals?

To not drop a set the whole tournament and back up both my individual and team's wins from last year.

💪 Which current squash player inspires you and why?

Paul Coll, because of how hard he works and how he looks for ways to better himself in whatever it is he is doing.

🌟 As this is your last year at Junior Nationals, what have been your highlights over the years?

Winning the individual and team events last year. Although, if I back both of them up this year for my last Nationals, that'd be my new highlight.

Max has been a familiar face at Junior Nationals for many years, and as he prepares for his final tournament, he'll be aiming to cap off an impressive junior career in style. With high standards, a strong work ethic, and a championship mindset, it'll be exciting to see what he can achieve on the courts this week.

Good luck, Max, and all the best for your final GJ Gardner Junior Nationals campaign!

Happy Global Coaches Day!

Today we celebrate and thank the incredible coaches who make sport possible at every level. From the volunteers introducing young players to the game for the first time, to the coaches supporting athletes on the world stage, your passion, knowledge and dedication help shape sporting journeys every day.

Coaches do so much more than teach skills. They inspire confidence, create opportunities, build communities, and help athletes become the best versions of themselves both on and off the court.

To every coach investing their time, energy and expertise into our sport, thank you for the impact you make.

Happy Global Coaches Day to all coaches, from grassroots to elite performance.

🌟 Junior Nationals Spotlight: Casey Ellery 🌟

As we continue our GJ Gardner Junior Nationals Junior Spotlight Series, we're catching up with some of the exciting young players preparing to take on New Zealand's biggest junior squash event. Next up is Casey Ellery, a 16-year-old A2 player from Greymouth with her sights set on big goals both at home and on the international stage.

🏆 What's one squash event you'd love to compete in someday?

One squash event that I would love to play in the future is the Egyptian Squash Open and to play on the outside glass court in front of the pyramids. I think it would be an extremely cool experience to play in Egypt, as squash is such a high level and so popular there. Just to be in that environment would be awesome.

💪 What skill or quality have you been working hardest to build this year?

This year I have been working extremely hard on my fitness and speed on the court. During the season I have had a few injuries and I have been unable to train that cardio as much as I would like. I have worked on my rehab and strengthening my weaknesses. I have also used the off-court time to improve the mental and tactical aspects of my game.

🎯 What is your goal for Junior Nationals?

My goal for NZ Nationals this year is to win the Under 17 Girls title.

🌟 Which current squash player inspires you and why?

The current squash player that inspires me is definitely Paul Coll. As he is also from Greymouth, it is inspiring to see someone from our small town achieve at such a high level. It just highlights what you can achieve with hard work and determination.

🙌 What is your favourite part of competing at Junior Nationals?

My favourite part about Junior Nationals is the environment of the tournament. Even though it is an individual sport, your friends cheer you on and you get to meet so many new people from all over New Zealand.

Best of luck to Casey as she takes on the country's best at this year's GJ Gardner Junior Nationals. With clear goals, a strong work ethic, and plenty of determination, she's definitely one to watch!

🌟 Junior Nationals Spotlight: Nikos Michalakis 🌟

As we count down to the GJ Gardner Junior Nationals, we're shining a light on some of the talented young players set to take the court. First up is Nikos Michalakis from Hawkes Bay. At just 9 years old and already a C1 player, Nikos is turning heads with his passion, dedication, and big goals for the future!

🏆 What’s one squash event you'd love to compete in someday?

When I’m older, the PSA Tour, but for now the British Junior Open has to be top of the list for me. It has the best kids from all around the world. In January 2027, Dad and I are flying over to compete, and I can’t wait! It’s going to be so cool seeing what other U11s are out there and testing myself against them.

🎯 What skill or quality have you been working hardest to build this year?

My backhand volley and my trickle boast.

🥇 What is your goal for Junior Nationals?

I’m 9, I won the Under 11s last year, so getting my name on the U13 cup would be soooo cool. Imagine that!

💪 Which current squash player inspires you and why?

I have a few!

My Dad. He’s super fit and runs around the court like he’s 18. Me, my brother, my sister and Dad have a joke about who will reach A Grade first. Dad is B1 and reckons he’ll get there first because he’s closest, but I’m not totally sure Dad is joking, which makes it even funnier! Dad trains with me heaps and pushes me hard, so he inspires me a lot.

Paul Coll. Heaps of Kiwis back PC. He’s New Zealand’s GOAT!

Oliver Dunbar. He’s fun and cheeky. He’s gone overseas living the dream, and that’s really cool to see.

🙌 What is your favourite part of competing at Junior Nationals?

Playing and seeing my friends from all over New Zealand who I don’t get to see that often, being court rats between every match, and getting in some three-quarter court. It’s the best!

Good luck to Nikos and all of our players as they prepare for GJ Gardner Junior Nationals. We can't wait to see the next generation of Kiwi squash stars in action!
