Progress Update on the future of Avondale Racecourse.

The Avondale Jockey Club Incorporated (AJC) today confirmed that constructive and collaborative work is underway with TAB New Zealand (TAB NZ) to determine the future of the Avondale Racecourse.

The AJC is committed to working with the wider racing industry to identify the most appropriate long-term outcome for the site. A full range of options is currently under consideration, including long-term retention, medium-term retention, and immediate sale. Any decision will be carefully assessed to ensure it is well-informed and reflects the interests of the Club, its members, and the wider community.

Following extensive discussions with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) during 2025, and further engagement initiated through TAB NZ, the AJC and TAB NZ Advisory Committee supported by Auckland Thoroughbred Racing (ATR) are now progressing a joint evaluation process.

This process extends beyond a simple valuation of the property. Independent property specialists have been engaged to undertake a joint venture study, assessing a range of potential land use scenarios aimed at maximising long-term value for the racing industry while also delivering positive outcomes for the community. An AJC-appointed subcommittee will engage directly with stakeholders to ensure that all perspectives are appropriately considered.

TAB NZ Chairman Bill Birnie said the approach reflects the importance of a considered and evidence-based process.

“We welcome the AJC’s willingness to engage constructively in what is understandably a complex and sensitive matter. This joint study will provide a robust foundation to support the next phase of decision-making.”

AJC Acting President Andrew Skinner said the process provides a clear pathway forward.

“We thank TAB NZ and its Advisory Committee, ATR, and NZTR for their involvement and support. This process gives us confidence that we can fully assess the options and arrive at a resolution that recognises the significance of the Avondale Racecourse for both the industry and the community.”

Further updates will be provided as the work progresses.

AJC's celebration for the return to racing following a lengthy hiatus caused by a controversial partial abandonment of racing in September 2023.

On a well scheduled race day sunshine, a cool breeze a…beautiful July Winters day.
The track manager Tim Karr and team have worked tirelessly to have the track ready for Wednesday’s race day with the successful running of an 8-race card.
