People often ask if I miss the work I used to do in New Zealand.
I think most people assume I miss the vibrancy of high-performance sport, and of course that was an incredible chapter of my life.
But what I actually miss most are the friendships and the community I was part of. Being surrounded by bodyworkers, therapists and coaches who could happily spend hours discussing the smallest details of our work. Sharing ideas, challenging each other, learning together, without ego or agenda, just a genuine desire to become better at what we do.
Because ultimately, it’s never really about us. It’s about lifting others, whether that’s colleagues in the industry or the people who walk through our doors for a class or a session.
I’m so grateful to be putting down roots here and building those connections again. 💕
LAURA / REFORMER, WUNDA CHAIR & MAT PILATES EST. 2020, you are a joy. Thank you. 🙏🏼

Damn it’s hot!
Relentlessly so 😅
This week I’ve had a few people apologising for feeling flat in class, taking more breaks or not quite having their usual energy.
Please don’t apologise!
In heat like this your body is already working HARD.
Bad sleep.
Less recovery.
More dehydration.
Higher heart rates.
Less patience.
Less energy.
And if you’re spending all day trying to work, commute, wrangle kids, sleep, etc. in this heat, that’s very different from a day when you have chosen to get a sweaty workout on for an hour.
I’m incredibly grateful all the studios I teach in have air conditioning, but even then I think this week is a good reminder that health isn’t just about pushing harder.
Sometimes it’s about recognising what season you’re in and adjusting accordingly.
Move if it feels good.
Rest if you need to.
Drink some water.
Go sit under a tree 🤷🏼‍♀️🌳
A single missed workout won’t set you backwards.
Your body gets stronger when training and recovery work together, and I firmly believe learning when to soften and be kind to yourself will get you to your goals way faster 🤙🏻
Much love xx

What do I want to carry forward, and what am I willing to let rest?

breathe in the salty air - the ocean-weathered sand - the scuttering dotterels - the pink light shifting through dark clouds - the concerto of waves - the cantata of sea birds - the not-a-soul in sight
carry home and breathe in beauty when your legs fail
and the world is out of tune 🤍

We are naturally attracted to things that challenge us and things that our body seems to lend itself well to. I used to think that if we loved something we would naturally do more of it but actually, human behaviour is far more complicated than that.

You can genuinely love Pilates and still not feel like coming to class. You can love hiking and still choose the sofa. You can even love how you feel afterwards and still find yourself being talked out of it beforehand.

Our emotions influence whether we exercise in the first place, but what about in the middle of a class you are otherwise enjoying and the teacher suddenly brings out the back extension work (my nemesis)?

You can’t just quit because you don’t enjoy that particular exercise!

Health psychology tells us that how we feel during exercise matters, but so does competence and self efficacy. Not every part of a practice has to feel joyful for the practice itself to be meaningful.

Part of learning is being willing to sit in things that feel awkward, frustrating or uncomfortable and staying curious long enough to discover that perhaps you are capable of more than you first thought.

Avoidance teaches the brain something too. If we repeatedly opt out of the things we find difficult, we reinforce the idea that they are not for us. But when we meet challenge with curiosity and experience success, confidence grows.

Movement should contain joy, but not every moment needs to be joyful.

Senses of May

Taste – I was surrounded by tomatoes in Andalusia so, gazpacho or tomato, peach and burrata bruschetta. Probably the latter 🤤

Sound – Women’s laughter! If you have been in my classes over this last month then thank you for your joy. Seems like the lighter months have come with lighter moods ☀️

Sight – The turquoise waters of La Isleta del Moro. It’s like time slowed down there.

Smell – Salt air, but also the mix of hot sun and breeze carried over the river of my little village, it’s so unique to lazy summer days and nostalgic.

Touch – I’m carrying this over from April because I’ve been too lazy to keep this little tradition going… Warm hugs from some special Antipodean friends. Seeing you again filled my cup ❤️ .mullins

One of the things we love most about practicing in a group environment is the ripple effect that goes far beyond the physical practice itself.

We all know the scenario, You arrive to class feeling a little flat (life is happening outside the studio). Energy can be low, same with your confidence and possibly your head is elsewhere.

Then your teacher has the audacity to keep adding layer upon layer until suddenly you find yourself doing something that, if you’d been asked at the start of class you never would have attempted!

YOU doubted yourself, your teacher didn’t ☺️

There’s something incredibly powerful about being seen as capable before you can see it yourself.

And around you are the same people you move with each week, Encouraging each other, Laughing through frustrations, Sharing hard moments wins.

Then the class finishes and you walk out thinking, “Oh my God… I just moved in a way I never thought I could.”

Beyond fear, doubt and a story of yourself that no longer serves you.

There’s so much power to this.
