The elevation to life membership of Robyne Walker highlighted the Takapuna Bowling Club’s annual meeting at the weekend.

Robyne has just stepped down from the notable contribution she has made over the past decade as firstly club secretary, then a term as president, and over the past couple of years as board chair.

Her nomination for life membership was made by board member Wynne Gray and was confirmed by the large attendance at the meeting of club members.

Wynne provided a comprehensive over-view of the huge service Robyne has given the club. This has seen her involved in just about every club activity and has also meant considerable time spent in liaising with not only local bodies but with Bowls North Harbour, where she also served a term as board chair, and Bowls New Zealand.

And one of the most daunting challenges is her time as secretary was a major role in steering the club through the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

She has also maintained, despite all this work away from the green, a high standard of playing, having gained high honours in club, centre and national championships levels and having been a regular Harbour representative at one-to-eight, Development and Open Prem levels.

Her most recent centre titles were gained in the past season, in the triples and in the fours, and she has won two national titles, in the champion of champion fours and inter-club sevens, and been a national runner-up in the fours and the pairs.

Among her many Takapuna titles has been the mixed pairs in the 2017-18 season with husband, Brett O’Riley, who is the other half of a bowls power couple. Currently he is president of World Bowls, Patron of Bowls North Harbour, and a distinguished bowler himself.

His many playing deeds have included two runner-up finishes at the national championships, in the singles where he was beaten by the great Peter Belliss and in the four where he was teamed with the Skoglunds, Phil senior, Phillip junior and Raymond.

As Wynne pointed out in his citation, Robyne comes from bowling royalty, with two of her fore-bears Bowls New Zealand Hall of Fame inductees. The first was great grand uncle Professor Maxwell Walker, a legendary bowler in the early 20th century and winner of five national titles.

And the second was her paternal grandfather Cyril Walker, a national administrator and national selector and manager, and a founder of the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute.

Wynne’s nomination of Robyne was seconded by one of the club’s other members, Lindsay Knight, who highlighted Robyne’ s unprecedented administrative status within the club. He pointed out that she was in the unique position of having held the posts of secretary, president and board chair.
