Well some days you just get lucky. Today I had shot out to explore a new stream only to find the wind and rain made it practically unfishable. I made the call to cut my losses and try an old haunt tucked away in the bush, in the hopes of just catching one fish for the day if I was lucky. I was shocked to find that the place has changed completely after all the storms since I have been living in the South Island, and is now a much better fishery for the fly angler πŸ˜† I caught around a dozen good fish, a great way to end the week. I look forward to seeing how my other old favorite rivers have changed...

Today was a tough one, starting out by driving around looking for new water to try and finding my efforts unsuccessful. So pretty much wasted my morning, not to mention a bit of gas. Ah well, I ended up going and trying some water I haven't tried in a few years instead, and was surprised to find a group of a dozen Brown Trout hanging out together in the very first pool I fished. I managed to catch 3 of them on a light dry dropper, and then finished the session on another river catching a bunch of small angry Rainbows. Just a good chill day in the end πŸ€™

Today I managed to shoot out for the last few hours of light to test my Dabbler 9ft 4wt against some of the local Brown and Rainbow Trout in Winter conditions. High fast water made heavily weighted flies a necessity and that proved successful. However that's not what I wanted to fish on my new 4wt so I put a dry-dropper on, and somehow I caught even more fish that way πŸ˜… The rod performed great, and made the smaller local fish a lot of fun. Highlights of the mission were a large ~4lb Rainbow which is unusual for this river, as well as a last second Dry fly Brown 🀣 Good times.

I finally persuaded the bro to come fly fishing πŸ˜† After a couple of hours teaching him to fish our small tight Waikato waters he managed to pick it up, and we went on to find a sweet little honey hole full of wild winter Trout. Nothing huge this trip but out of super small water you can't help but appreciate these little pieces of art. They put up a great scrap too!
