Sport Canterbury - Mid Canterbury

Sport Canterbury - Mid Canterbury In 1989, Sport Canterbury was established as the Regional Sports Trust for the Waitaha Te Tai Poutini regions. We continue to grow our hapori.

Sport Canterbury, established in 1989 as the Regional Sports Trust for Waitaha Canterbury/Te Tai Poutini West Coast, is dedicated to fostering community and connection through play, active recreation and sport. The role of sport is to provide people of all ages with a sense of community and connection. For that reason, for over 30 years we have been committed to empowering coaches, clubs and sports. We know the value that sport, play, physical activity and recreation have in building better communities - helping people feel good about themselves. Sport Canterbury is also the home of Healthy Families Ōtautahi, Healthy Active Learning, Community Strength and Balance and Workplace First Aid, collaborating with partners in health and education to improve outcomes for the wellbeing of our whānau.

Some people are just quietly legendary and if you know Ruby, you’ll know exactly what we mean. 🌟

Ruby is the kind of gal who fearlessly gives everything a go, and we’re incredibly grateful that she took the time to sit down with Arlo and share a little of her Halberg Foundation Games story with us.

Through Ruby’s experience, we hope to help spread the word about the Halberg Games and, more importantly, the importance of creating genuine opportunities for tamariki and rangatahi with disabilities to experience, enjoy and belong in sport.

Because every child deserves the chance to find a sport they love, challenge themselves, make friends and experience the joy of being active.

A huge thank you to Ruby for sharing her time, her experience and a little piece of her story with us. You’re a bit of a legend, Ruby! 👑

Today the Sport Canterbury crew said a very bittersweet farewell to the incredible Anna Holland 💚

After five wonderful years with the Mid Canterbury Sport Canterbury team as our Healthy Active Learning Facilitator, Anna is heading off on a new work adventure.

Anna has made such a wonderful contribution to our team, community and to the schools shes worked alongside over the years.

We’ll definitely miss having her smiling face around the office but the good news is she’s not going far! You’ll still see Anna out and about in the community.. unless she’s off on one of her adventures, exploring our beautiful backyard! 🥾⛰️

Thank you for everything, Anna. We’ve loved having you as part of the Sport Canterbury whānau and wish you all the very best for whatever comes next! 💚

This week we came together to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori through waiata, karakia, kōrero, tākaro and connection.

From sharing phrases and personal commitments to te reo Māori, to giving whutuporo pā and taonga tākaro a go alongside our partners, the week was full of learning, laughter and whanaungatanga. We also joined the wider community in celebrating te reo Māori across Ōtautahi through the Hikoi mō te Reo Māori.

As we finish with today's theme, Te Reo Tuku Iho, we're reminded that the future of te reo Māori is shaped by what we do beyond this week. For us, that whakaaro is reflected in Tūhono, our pounamu mauri stone, which sits within Whare Hākinakina and symbolises the connections across our people, places and communities. Tūhono reminds us that this journey is ongoing, and that each of us has a responsibility for what we contribute and what we leave for those who follow.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who got involved, embraced the challenge and gave it a go.

Patua te taniwha o whakamā. Karawhiua! 💙💚💛🖤
