According to Mundo Deportivo, an agreement between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid for Julián Álvarez currently appears impossible.

However, the report claims there is one unusual legal route still available.

Álvarez could theoretically terminate his contract with Atlético Madrid unilaterally under Spain's Royal Decree 1006, which governs the employment relationship of professional athletes.

If he chooses that route, a Spanish labour court would determine the compensation Atlético should receive.

The interesting part is that this compensation would not necessarily be the €490 million release clause in his contract.

However, if Álvarez joins Barcelona within one year of terminating his contract, Barcelona could be held subsidiarily responsible for the compensation owed to Atlético.

So this isn't a simple "Álvarez leaves for free" situation.

It's a complicated legal route that could potentially allow the Argentine to leave Atlético despite the clubs being unable to reach an agreement.

For now, this remains a very difficult and risky route, but according to Mundo Deportivo, it could be the only remaining option for Álvarez to make the move to Barcelona.

Flick's system depends a lot on having a proper No. 9, and with Barcelona's financial limitations possibly making the next two transfer windows difficult, leaving that position unresolved would be a huge gamble.

Even waiting until January for Álvarez isn't a safe plan. Atlético may simply refuse to sell, while other clubs, including Arsenal, could enter the race with much stronger financial offers.

That's why I still believe Barça will make a move for a striker before the window closes. Flick and Deco are reportedly working on the position, so we should soon find out whether the “Álvarez or nobody” story is actually true.
