Long before computers, data centers, and modern factories, the Netherlands had its own high-tech revolution.
In the 17th century, thousands of windmills weren’t just picturesque landmarks. They were powerful machines driving sawmills, manufacturing, drainage, and large-scale land reclamation.

Forget Silicon Valley. Long before computers, data centers, and modern factories, the Netherlands had its own high-tech revolution—and it ran on wind.
In the 17th century, thousands of windmills weren’t just picturesque landmarks. They were powerful machines driving sawmills, manufacturing, drainage, and large-scale land reclamation.
The windmill wasn’t just a symbol of the Netherlands.
It was infrastructure.
It was engineering.
It was an energy revolution.
So what can 17th-century Dutch innovation teach us about building a cleaner, more resilient future?

If you're anything like me, you are tired of finding bad quality Shein clothes at Amsterdam vintage stores that still sell for over €20!!! Therefore, we here at Amsterbike have assembled our favorite truly cheap and truly funky thrifts in the city. Most importantly, many of these organizations go above and beyond for their neighborhoods, making your purchase that much more impactful. Follow us for more local tips 👠

Enjoyed our city’s amazing canal pride parade? Still in town for the week, or have lived here your whole life? Either way, when it comes to Amsterdam’s q***r history, there is always more to learn!
We have created this free off-the-beaten-path self-guided q***r history tour (that’s a mouthful!) to give both visitors and residents a way to explore it for themselves. We’d of course love it if you rented a bike from us and followed the route that way 🚲, but you can just as easily use this as a free self-guided walking tour.
More than anything, we just want to share a little more of the history that helped shape the city we love. 🌈
