Today, Shooting Stars of Ibadan announced Chowdeck as its front-of-shirt sponsor.
It is good news for the club, but there is a commercial lesson worth examining.
A lot has gone on behind the scenes to make the partnership happen. We may not have visibility into all of it, but one element of the alignment is clear.
Ibadan is one of Chowdeck’s biggest cities, alongside Lagos and Abuja.
That brings us to two things sponsors look at when assessing commercial alignment: audience and geography.
When a sports property is prospecting for partners, the question should not simply be, “Which companies can sponsor us?”
A better question is:
Which companies are trying to reach the audience we already have, and where are they trying to reach them?
This is where commercially mature sports properties need to become more deliberate.
If your club, league, tournament or academy has a meaningful audience in a particular market, that geography is a commercial asset.
You should therefore be looking for companies that are actively targeting that same market.
If the sponsor wants to reach people in your region and you already have access to an audience there, you have established one important area of alignment before the first commercial conversation begins.
This is one of the foundations of better sponsorship prospecting.
Know your audience.
Know where your audience is.
Then identify organisations that have a commercial reason to reach them.
Geography and Audience.
Two simple variables that can significantly improve the quality of a sports property's prospecting.

One of the principles we'll be discussing during the Executive Commercial Readiness Intensive is how to position a sports property for commercial partnerships.
I'm pleased to share that we've just secured an official sponsorship partnership for the Intensive itself.
We'll make the official announcement tomorrow.
What makes this meaningful is not simply securing a sponsor. It's understanding the process that made the partnership possible.
During the Intensive, we'll walk through the same commercial thinking and practical framework we use for our own projects and for the sports properties we advise.
Registration closes tomorrow.

EXECUTIVE COMMERCIAL READINESS INTENSIVE
For Club Owners, Academy Owners, Sporting Directors, Tournament Organisers, and Sports Administrators.
Many sports properties have existed for years.
They have players.
They have competitions.
They have visibility.
They have supporters.
Yet many remain heavily dependent on owner funding, donations, player transfers, or occasional support.
The challenge is often not a lack of effort.
The challenge is the absence of a structured commercial foundation.
The Executive Commercial Readiness Intensive is a practical working session designed to help sports stakeholders understand the commercial realities of their organisations and identify opportunities for sustainable growth.
During this intensive, participants will learn how to:
• Assess the commercial state of their sports property
• Identify hidden commercial assets
• Understand sponsorship readiness
• Build revenue opportunities beyond player transfers
• Position their sports property for partnerships and long-term growth
BONUS
Every participant will receive a complimentary Commercial Assessment Session focused on their organisation.
Date: 23rd – 24th July 2026

Between 2021 and 2025, I had the privilege of securing 10 sponsorship deals across football properties, including 3 international partnerships and 7 national deals.
What stands out is not the number of deals secured. It is the duration of the relationships built.
Two of those partnerships have been retained for 2 years and 5 years respectively. That experience reinforced a lesson many sports properties often overlook:
The most valuable sponsorship deals are rarely one-off event partnerships.
Long-term sponsorships give both the property and the sponsor enough time to achieve meaningful commercial outcomes. They allow brands to build familiarity with audiences, refine activation strategies, measure results properly, and generate returns that justify continued investment.
A sponsorship that lasts beyond a single season often delivers more value than a larger deal tied to a single event.
In football, securing a sponsor is important. Building a partnership that remains relevant year after year is where the real commercial work begins.

Many clubs, academies, and tournaments are active, visible, and well-organised, yet still struggle to attract sponsorship or consistent revenue.
In most cases, the issue is not effort.
It is commercial structure.
At Home of Ballers, we are currently working with selected sports properties through a 30-Day Commercial Revenue Diagnostic designed to identify:
• Missed sponsorship opportunities
• Underutilised commercial assets
• Weak positioning affecting sponsor trust
• Realistic revenue pathways that can be pursued immediately
If you would like to discuss your club, academy, or tournament, send a message to Chidi J. Myles on +2348132833633 to schedule a brief session.
