Sports Without Mentorship Ends in Sorrow

I've been thinking about something that has become increasingly clear to me.

Chess can teach extraordinary mental discipline. Karate can develop remarkable physical and mental discipline.

But neither guarantees that those lessons will make their way into the rest of our lives.

A chess player can learn to think several moves ahead and still struggle with life's decisions.

A karateka can train for years to develop discipline and resilience and still leave those qualities on the dojo floor.

So what is missing?

The translation from training to life.

And I believe mentorship plays a critical role in making that connection.

The greatest tragedy isn't losing a match or a tournament.

It is spending years developing valuable qualities and never realizing they were meant to serve a purpose beyond the game itself.

This realization is beginning to shape how I think about what we are building at Zen Budo—and what I believe a dojo can ultimately become.

What a performance by our young athletes!

Zen Budo Karate emerged 1st Overall at the just-concluded Zen Budo U12 State Open Karate Championship, bringing home:

🥇 2 Gold
🥈 2 Silver
🥉 6 Bronze

This is more than a medal haul. It is the result of discipline, hard work, consistent training, committed coaches, supportive parents, and determined young athletes.

We are proud of every single one of you! 👏🏽

And this is only the beginning.

8/08/26 — A Day We Will Remember! 🏆🥋

What happens when 45 young athletes from seven karate clubs come together to compete?

📌 You get courage.
📌 You get excitement.
📌 You get proud parents.
📌 You get unforgettable memories.
📌 And you get a glimpse of the future of karate in Rivers State.

The inaugural Zen Budo U12 Statewide Karate Championships was held on Saturday, 8 August 2026, and it was everything we hoped it would be — and more.

45 athletes. 17 boys. 28 girls. 16 medals. 5 trophies. 4 categories.

And that 28 girls statistic deserves a special mention. 👧🏽🥋

For a combat sport, having girls make up 62.2% of our participants is a remarkable achievement. It tells us that parents are beginning to see karate not simply as a fighting sport, but as a pathway to discipline, confidence, courage, fitness and character development for their children — girls and boys alike.

There were so many memorable moments.

One of them came from six-year-old Ebube Harold-George of Zen Budo Karate Club, who delivered an energetic Heian Godan and clinched Kata gold. 🥇

When the referees flagged her as the winner, the uproar from the crowd was deafening! 😂🔥

And Ebube was not alone.

Across the four categories, our young athletes delivered moments of courage, skill, determination and sporting spirit that kept parents and spectators engaged throughout the competition.

But perhaps the most beautiful moment came when parents were invited onto the tatami to present trophies to their own children. Those weren't just photographs.

Those were memories being made.

The championship also taught us important lessons about what we need to do next — particularly the need to develop not only athletes, but also coaches and referees if we want to build a stronger and more trusted sports karate community.

And of course, none of this would have been possible without our sponsors, participating clubs, officials, referees, coaches, volunteers, parents and everyone who believed in the vision.

This was more than a competition.
It was a celebration of children, family, sport, courage and community.
