Why Your Staff Are Tired by 2PM (And Why It’s Not Their Fault)

Yesterday, I visited an office in Lagos and noticed something interesting.
By 2PM, almost everyone looked drained—yet the workday wasn’t even over.

It wasn’t laziness. It was something deeper.

Here’s what most companies are missing:

By 2PM in most offices, something changes.

You’ll notice it if you pay attention. The energy drops. Conversations become slower. People start checking their phones more often. Some are staring at their screens, but not really working.

At first glance, it’s easy to blame the staff.
“They’re not serious.”
“They lack discipline.”
“They’re not driven.”

But that’s rarely the real problem.

The truth is, most workplaces are designed in a way that drains energy, not supports it.

Let’s look at a typical day.

Many employees leave home early—especially in cities like Lagos—often skipping breakfast or eating something quick and unbalanced.

Then they sit for hours. Meetings, emails, more sitting. Minimal movement. Little hydration. Constant screen exposure.

By the time it’s 2PM, their bodies and brains are simply responding to how they’ve been treated all day.
Fatigue is not laziness.

It’s a signal.

And if organizations don’t address it, it quietly affects everything—productivity, decision-making, even workplace morale.

So what can be done?

Not something complicated.
Simple interventions work:
- Encouraging short movement breaks during the day
- Promoting hydration (many people are more dehydrated than they realize)
- Educating staff on energy-friendly eating habits.

These are not “extra activities.” They are performance tools.

Because at the end of the day, no matter how skilled your team is, if their energy is low, their output will be low too.

And energy—unlike motivation—is
something you can design for.

I help organizations improve staff energy and productivity through structured workplace wellness sessions.

If your team often struggles with fatigue, low energy, or reduced focus, I’d be happy to support.

A BOARDROOM MEETING ONCE ENDED IN AN AMBULANCE

Years ago, while working in the creative industry, my team had a morning boardroom meeting.

It was around 9am.

We settled into the soft leather swivel chairs that most corporate offices proudly display.
The meeting had barely started when a colleague suddenly winced in pain.

His face froze.

Mouth open.

Eyes transfixed.

Something was clearly wrong.
We rushed to his side and tried to lift him out of the chair.
But every attempt made him scream in pain.

The diagnosis later came: a slipped disc (more correctly called a herniated disc).
The pain was so severe that an ambulance had to be called, and he was transported to hospital still seated in the chair.

That incident stayed with me.

It also triggered years of reading and research.

A slipped disc occurs when one of the cushioning discs between the spinal bones pushes out and presses on nearby nerves.

And contrary to popular belief, it rarely happens suddenly.

It is usually the result of years of small daily habits such as:
• Poor sitting posture
• Long hours at a desk
• Weak core muscles
• Sudden lifting of heavy objects
• Age-related spinal degeneration

Our colleague eventually recovered.
But he spent three months away from work.

Three months of treatment, physiotherapy, and recovery.
The company continued paying his salary during that period.

From an HR perspective, that was a significant productivity loss.
The bigger question is:
Was it avoidable?

In many cases, yes.

When organizations take employee wellness seriously — through workplace fitness culture, ergonomic awareness, and regular wellness education — they protect both their people and their productivity.

Healthy employees work better.
Healthy employees think clearer.
Healthy employees miss fewer workdays.

Corporate wellness is not a luxury. It is a business strategy.

As a fitness and executive wellness advisor, I have seen how small daily movement habits can prevent many workplace health crises.

Hot take: The gym is a scam for most Nigerians.

₦30k/month membership.
2 hours in Lagos traffic to get there.
Another hour finding parking.

For what? Equipment you can replace with bodyweight.

My ebooks: ₦4,000 one-time. Home-based. 20 minutes.

Do the math.
