Mostafa is the son of Ahmed Shobeir. And believe it or not, Ahmed Shobeir changed football forever.

At Italia 1990, he was Egypt’s goalkeeper as the nation returned to the World Cup after 56 years away. That tournament became remembered for its low number of goals and conservative tactics. And one of its most infamous matches was Egypt’s 0-0 draw with Ireland in Palermo.

For long stretches, Egypt’s defenders repeatedly played the ball back to Shobeir, who at the time was allowed to pick it up with his hands after a pass from a teammate. And Ireland did the same.

The reaction was so strong that, two years later, FIFA and IFAB changed the rules, banning goalkeepers from handling deliberate back-passes from teammates. That is how the back-pass rule was born, one of the most important changes in modern football history.
