Midwife Explains: Birth Plans

A birth plan isn’t about planning every minute of labor.

It’s about helping your care team understand what matters most to you and making sure your voice is part of the conversation. 🌿

Here are 5 things to know about birth plans:

1️⃣ A birth plan is a guide, not a guarantee.
Birth can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. A birth plan helps communicate your preferences while leaving room for flexibility if circumstances change.

2️⃣ It’s about your preferences.
Your birth plan can include things like who you’d like in the room, your preferred pain relief options, positions for labor, music, lighting, skin-to-skin contact, and infant feeding preferences.

3️⃣ It starts important conversations.
Writing a birth plan encourages you to ask questions, understand your options, and discuss your wishes with your midwife or healthcare provider before labor begins.

4️⃣ Flexibility is part of a good birth plan.
The goal isn’t for everything to happen exactly as written. The goal is to feel informed, respected, and involved in decisions if plans need to change.

5️⃣ Your voice matters.
Whether your birth is straightforward or more complex than expected, you deserve to be listened to, kept informed, and involved in decisions about your care whenever possible.

A birth plan isn’t about controlling birth.

It’s about preparing for meaningful conversations, understanding your options, and helping create a birth experience where you feel informed, respected, and supported. 🤍

One of the biggest mistakes I made with my first baby happened before she was even born.

I spent months preparing for pregnancy and birth, convinced I’d have plenty of time after delivery to snuggle up with my newborn and read all the breastfeeding and baby books then.

Oh boy, was I wrong.🥴🙈

It took me nearly a year to pick up a book again. Like many new mums, I also assumed breastfeeding would come naturally to both me and my baby. Instead, I discovered that breastfeeding is a learned skill, and that almost every parent faces the same questions, worries and misconceptions along the way.

That’s exactly why we’re hosting our next **Midwife Live Talk**!

Join *midwife and IBCLC lactation consultant Karin Siegler* and me, *Anna King* (mum of two and your moderator), for a free, interactive Zoom session for mums, parents-to-be and anyone supporting a breastfeeding family.

Together, we’ll tackle some of the most common breastfeeding misconceptions, answer the questions we’ve received from our WhatsApp community, and respond to your live questions during the session. If you’ve ever wondered whether your baby feeds too often, whether you’re making enough milk, whether pain in the beginning is „normal,“ or whether you’re doing something wrong - you are far from alone.

Come along for an honest, judgement-free conversation filled with practical, evidence-based advice. No question is too small, too personal or too embarrassing.

We’d love to see you there! 💖🌷

When people prepare for a new baby, they often focus on the nursery, baby clothes, and hospital bags.

But your home also needs to be ready for you.

The fourth trimester is a time of healing, recovery, and adjustment. A little preparation before your baby arrives can make those first few weeks feel much more manageable. 🌿

Here are 5 ways to prepare your home for the fourth trimester:

1️⃣ Create a recovery station.
Set up a space with the essentials you’ll use every day. Keep water, healthy snacks, nursing supplies if needed, medications, chargers, burp cloths, and anything else within easy reach. The goal is to make caring for yourself and your baby as convenient as possible.

2️⃣ Stock your kitchen with easy meals.
You won’t always have the time or energy to cook. Preparing freezer meals, healthy snacks, or arranging meal support ahead of time can take one major task off your plate.

3️⃣ Set up baby care essentials in the places you’ll use most.
Keep diapers, wipes, extra clothes, muslins, and changing supplies in more than one area of the house. It saves unnecessary trips when you’re recovering.

4️⃣ Prepare your support system.
Think beyond the birth. Decide who can help with meals, laundry, school runs, grocery shopping, or simply keeping you company. Accepting help is part of preparing, not a sign that you’re struggling.

5️⃣ Make your home a place that encourages rest.
You don’t need everything to be perfect. Focus on creating a calm, comfortable environment where you can slow down, heal, and bond with your baby without feeling pressure to keep everything in order.

The fourth trimester isn’t just about welcoming your baby home. It’s about creating a space where both of you can settle, recover, and thrive together. 🤍

Pregnant women receive a lot of advice.

What to eat. What not to eat. How to sleep. How to prepare. What to expect.

While most of it comes from a good place, what many pregnant women need isn’t more advice. 🌿

Here are 5 things pregnant women need more of (that aren’t advice):

1️⃣ Rest.
Growing a baby is hard work.
Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is encourage her to slow down, not do more.

2️⃣ Understanding.
Pregnancy can be physically demanding and emotionally complex.
A little patience and empathy can go a long way.

3️⃣ Practical help.
Helping with errands, meals, chores, or everyday tasks often means more than another pregnancy tip.

4️⃣ Reassurance.
Many women carry worries they don’t always talk about.
A simple “You’re doing great” can be more powerful than you realize.

5️⃣ Space to be honest.
Pregnancy isn’t joyful every moment of every day.
Women need room to talk about their fears, frustrations, and challenges without feeling judged.

Sometimes the best support isn’t knowing what to say.
It’s showing up, listening, and reminding her she doesn’t have to carry everything alone. 🤍

Preparing for birth isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about asking the right questions, understanding your options, and feeling more confident in the decisions you make along the way. 🌿

Here are 5 questions that can help you feel more prepared for birth:

1️⃣ What helps me feel safe and supported?
Everyone’s needs are different.
Think about the people, environment, and support that help you feel calm and cared for.

2️⃣ What are my preferences for labor and birth?
Consider things like pain relief options, movement during labor, and who you want present.
Knowing your preferences can help guide conversations with your care team.

3️⃣ Who will advocate for me if I need support?
Whether it’s a partner, family member, doula, or midwife, having someone who understands your wishes can be incredibly reassuring.

4️⃣ How do I want to prepare for unexpected changes?
Birth doesn’t always go according to plan.
Thinking about flexibility ahead of time can help you feel more grounded if circumstances shift.

5️⃣ What questions do I still need answered?
You don’t need to know everything, but you deserve to feel informed.
Write down your questions and bring them to your appointments.

Birth preparation is not about controlling every outcome.
It’s about building confidence, gathering support, and understanding your options so you can approach the experience feeling informed and empowered. 🤍
