SUNDAY REFLECTION
What is one decision you made in the past that seemed right at the time but later turned out to be a mistake?
I can think of several.
Interestingly, most of my mistakes were not caused by lack of intelligence.
They were caused by lack of clarity.
At the time, I genuinely believed I was making good decisions.
I was educated.
Experienced.
Hardworking.
Yet I still made mistakes that cost me nearly ₦5 million.
That experience taught me something important:
Good people can make expensive mistakes when they are making decisions from uncertainty.
Today, I spend more time asking questions before making major commitments.
Sometimes the quality of our future depends on the quality of the questions we ask today.
What is one lesson life has taught you that you wish you had learned earlier?

THE ACTIVITY TRAP
Have you ever been extremely busy and yet not getting closer to your goal?
I have.
After leaving banking, I threw myself into activities.
I completed a section of an unfinished building and turned it into a training centre.
I hired staff.
Printed flyers.
Advertised.
Attended classes for my second master's degree.
On the surface, I looked productive.
Inside, I was confused.
Years later, I realized I had fallen into what I now call The Activity Trap.
The Activity Trap happens when we become so focused on doing something that we forget to ask whether what we are doing is actually moving us toward our goal.
Activity feels good.
It gives us a sense of movement.
It reduces our anxiety.
But activity without direction can be very expensive.
Looking back, I wasn't lacking effort.
I was lacking clarity.
Today, whenever I meet professionals preparing for business ownership, I encourage them to ask:
"Is this activity moving me closer to the future I want to build?"
That single question can save years of frustration.
Have you ever fallen into the Activity Trap?

ACTIVITY IS NOT PROGRESS
One of the most expensive lessons I learned after leaving banking was this:
Being busy is not the same as making progress.
For almost a year, I ran a training business that generated little or no meaningful income.
Yet every day I was busy.
There were staff to supervise.
Flyers to print.
Advertisements to place.
Expenses to pay.
Plans to make.
From the outside, it looked like progress.
From the inside, the business was standing still.
Many professionals fall into this trap.
We mistake movement for progress.
We assume that because we are working hard, results must be around the corner.
Unfortunately, business doesn't work that way.
Results matter.
Customers matter.
Revenue matters.
What is one activity you are doing today that feels productive but may not actually be moving you closer to your goal?

WHY I STARTED THE WRONG BUSINESS
After leaving banking, I became convinced that I needed to start something quickly.
I wanted to remain productive.
I wanted to stay relevant.
I wanted to prove that I could still contribute.
Because I enjoy teaching and helping people, I decided to start a customer service training business.
I quickly completed a section of an unfinished building on my property and equipped it to serve as a training centre.
I hired staff.
Printed flyers.
Advertised on local radio.
Everything looked professional.
There was only one problem.
The customers never came.
Looking back, I wasn't just starting a business.
I was trying to solve my uncertainty.
And that is a very expensive reason to start a business.
Have you ever realized later that you were solving the wrong problem?

SUNDAY REFLECTION
Let me ask you a question.
If your current job ended tomorrow, what would you do next?
Not what you hope you would do.
Not what your friends think you should do.
What would YOU actually do?
Would you start a business?
Travel?
Teach?
Consult?
Volunteer?
Go back to school?
Or are you still trying to figure it out?
There is no right or wrong answer.
But it is a question worth thinking about before circumstances force you to answer it.
For years, I knew my banking career would eventually end.
What I didn't know was what I wanted to move toward.
Today I believe every professional should spend as much time planning their next chapter as they spend planning their career.
Take a few minutes today and reflect.
What does your next chapter look like?

THE NEXT CHAPTER PROBLEM™
One of the biggest discoveries I made after leaving banking was this:
Many professionals spend decades planning their careers.
Very few spend enough time planning what comes after their careers.
As a result, they often know:
✓ What they are leaving
But they do not know:
✓ What they are moving toward
I call this The Next Chapter Problem™.
It was certainly my problem.
For years before leaving the bank, I knew my career would eventually end.
Yet when it finally happened, I still lacked clarity about what I wanted my next chapter to look like.
I had ideas.
I had interests.
I had possibilities.
But I had no clear direction.
Knowing your career will end is not the same thing as being prepared for what comes after.
What are you intentionally building beyond your current career?

THE FEAR I NEVER ADMITTED
When I left banking after 22 years, my biggest fear was not money.
It was not retirement.
It was not even losing my job.
My biggest fear was something I rarely admitted to anyone.
I did not want to tell people I was retired but doing nothing.
I didn't want to become inactive.
I didn't want to become irrelevant.
I didn't want people asking:
"So what do you do now?"
For many years, I thought I was alone in feeling that way.
Today, after speaking with many professionals, I know I wasn't.
Many people spend years preparing financially for retirement.
Far fewer prepare emotionally and mentally for the transition.
The truth is that work often gives us more than income.
It gives us structure.
Purpose.
Identity.
A sense of contribution.
When the job ends, those things don't automatically replace themselves.
Have you ever worried about what life would look like after your current career chapter ends?

THE DAY MY 22-YEAR BANKING CAREER ENDED
For years, I knew it was coming.
I had watched colleagues leave during restructuring exercises.
Deep down, I knew that one day it would be my turn.
Then one Sunday morning, I received an invitation to attend a meeting at the regional office.
When I arrived, several staff members were already there.
A brief speech was delivered.
Then we were handed letters informing us that our services were no longer required.
Just like that, a 22-year chapter of my life ended.
What surprised me most was that I wasn't sad.
In many ways, I felt relieved.
The job had stopped exciting me years earlier.
BUT, I was worried about something else.
I knew what I was leaving.
I did not know what I was moving toward.
Looking back, that uncertainty was harder than losing the job itself.
Many professionals approaching retirement or career transition face the same challenge.
The problem is not leaving.
The problem is not knowing what comes next.
Have you ever found yourself at a point where you knew something had to end but had no clarity about what should come next?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
