Whether it's your first session or your fifth, showing up prepared means we spend less time sorting and more time in the water. Save this. Share it with someone who needs it.
๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ โ this one's a must.
I always insist on this. It keeps your hair managed, protects it from chlorine, and honestly just puts you in the right headspace. Come with your cap, always.
๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐๐ โ nice to have, not required.
Here's my honest take: I train my students to swim without them first. Why? Because what happens the day you forget them at home โ do you skip the swim? No. You get in anyway. Goggles are a bonus, not a crutch.

If we're outdoors, that sun is working just as hard as you are. Apply before you get in, and reapply after. Your skin will thank you later.

The most important thing you can bring? An open mind and a willingness to try. Everything else is just details. ๐

Fresh out of my swimming instructor course, certificates still warm, I had a young lady show up ready to learn. She didn't know I was nervous. She just believed I knew what I was doing. That trust felt heavy in the best possible way.
The introduction to water went well. We moved through the early stages smoothly, the kind of start that makes you think, okay, I've got this๐. Then we got to developing the stroke.
I pulled out everything I'd learnt in class. The theory. The drills. The structured progressions. I applied them exactly as I'd been taught.
It wasn't working.
I could feel it ๐
she could feel it. Something wasn't clicking. And in that moment, a decision had to be made. Do I keep pushing the method? Or do I listen to what's actually happening in front of me?
I chose to listen.
I quietly set aside the textbook and reached back further, all the way back to when I was 4 or 5, and my own swimming teacher showed me how to move in water. No jargon. No framework. Just the real thing, passed down through touch and patience and instinct.
It worked.
That session taught me something I still carry into every lesson: knowledge is the foundation, but adaptability is what actually builds the house. The classroom gives you tools but the water will always tell you which one to use.
That young lady was the first person to show me what kind of instructor I was going to become. I didn't know it then. But I do now.

I am showing up a little differently here.
For a long time, Iโve kept things strictly 'business,' but if youโve ever been in a session with me, you know thereโs so much more to swimming than just laps. Iโm turning this page into a space for the 'why' behind the 'what.'
Iโll be sharing my personal journey as an instructor, the tips Iโve gathered over thousands of hours on the deck, and my honest takes on things swimming.
It's less about the 'freelance office' and more about the love for the water, my experiences coaching across different pools, locations ,the swim tips I stand by, and a few rants about pool etiquette (we all have them!).
