ArchivoVAR | The myth that referees favor Argentina? The numbers tell a different story. ๐ฆ๐ท
โข Messi not sent off vs Algeria: Messi's challenge on Mandi deserved a red card. Argentina benefited from that decision.
โข Algeria's disallowed goal: The offside call was correct, but the VAR used the wrong frame. It was a technical error that didn't change the outcome, but it still counts as a mistake against Argentina.
โข Messi's disallowed goal vs Algeria: VAR once again selected the wrong frame, leading to a legitimate goal being ruled out for offside. A clear error against Argentina.
โข Penalty not awarded vs Austria: The referee failed to award the penalty on the pitch, and VAR had to intervene to correct the decision. The original on-field call went against Argentina.
โข Foul not given before Egypt's goal: The referee initially allowed the goal to stand, but VAR overturned it after identifying a foul in the build-up. The original decision was against Argentina.
โข Embolo red card vs Switzerland: The referee booked Paredes instead of sending off Embolo, before VAR stepped in to correct the mistake. Once again, the initial on-field decision went against Argentina.
The real tally from six major refereeing decisions:
โ
1 decision favored Argentina.
โ 5 decisions initially went against Argentina, with VAR correcting three of them.
Without VAR, Argentina would have been disadvantaged in three different matches: they would have been denied a penalty against Austria, Egypt's goal would have stood despite the foul, Embolo would have avoided a red card against Switzerland, and Messi's wrongly disallowed goal would never have been corrected.

At the start of the World Cup, French star Michael Olise archived every photo on his Instagram account. At that time it looked like the actions of a man going through something personal.
But the truth was far more powerful.
Olise was standing in solidarity with his photographer, Florence Pernet, who had been denied a visa to travel to the United States for the World Cup.
According to Sports Illustrated, Olise had grown to deeply appreciate Pernetโs eye for storytelling. Her photographs captured emotion in a way that set her apart from everyone else.
While the worldโs best sports photographers surrounded him with crystal-clear 4K cameras, capturing every celebration, every sprint, and every goal from just a few feet away, Olise refused to post a single one of those images.
Instead, every photo on his account comes from Florence.
Unable to enter the United States, she sits at home watching the matches on television. She points her camera at the TV screen, photographs the moment from thousands of miles away, and sends it to him.
Those are the only images he shares with the world.
In an era where loyalty is often measured in words, Michael Olise chose actions instead.
This is a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful picture is not the sharpest one. It is the one that says to someone who has been left behind:
โI may be on the biggest stage in football, but you are still part of my journey.โ
