Former boxer Prichard Colón di£s at 33 ten years after tragic fight left him with brain injury

Former Puerto Rican boxer, Prichard Colón, has di£d at the age of 33.

He passed away on Thursday, August 13, nearly 11 years after a tragic fight gave him a brain haemorrhage that left him in a persistent vegetative state.

Colón’s dĀ£ath was announced by his father and former coach, Richard Colón, in a Facebook post on Thursday.

ā€œGood morning my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world, now he is in a better world.

ā€œI did everything possible to fulfil his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired but couldn’t.

ā€œThank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers,ā€ the father wrote.

Colón, a former junior middleweight who once held a 16-0 professional record with 13 knockouts, was regarded as one of boxing’s brightest prospects before his career was cut short in October 2015.

He suffered a brain bleed during a bout against American boxer, Terrel Williams, at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

He was knocked down twice in the ninth round after sustaining repeated blows to the back of the head, popularly known as rabbit punches, before his corner stopped the fight.

Colón was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a subdural hematoma requiring emergency surgery.

He spent 221 days in a coma and never regained the ability to walk or talk, relying on years of rehabilitation and family care for the rest of his life.

His injury led to a lasting change in the sport.

The World Boxing Council introduced the ā€œPrichard Colón Ruleā€ in 2016, mandating zero tolerance for blows to the back of the head.

Colón’s parents filed a $50m lawsuit in 2017 against the ringside doctor and promoters connected to the fight.

Goalkeepers getting their MOTM against Super Falcons just shows dominance without conversion.

14/08/2026

Blow your own trumpet, no one will blow it better.

14/08/2026

7 possible reasons the Super Falcons failed to get things right.

1. Poor preparation
The Falcons simply didn't have enough high-level competitive preparation going into WAFCON. Reports had already raised concerns about Nigeria's limited friendly schedule compared with rivals such as South Africa and Zambia.

2. Underestimating Cameroon
Nigeria went into the quarter-final as favourites but couldn't find a way past Cameroon. One moment — a free-kick goal — decided the game, despite Nigeria having much of the attacking initiative.

3. Failure to convert chances
This was perhaps the biggest footballing problem. Creating chances means little if you don't put the ball in the net. Against Cameroon, Nigeria had opportunities but lacked the cutting edge required in a knockout match.

4.Tactical shortcomings
Coach Justin Madugu took responsibility for the Cameroon defeat. The inability to break down a compact opponent and subsequently respond effectively when trailing exposed some tactical limitations.

5. Set-piece vulnerability
Losing a knockout game to a single free-kick is painful. Cameroon found the decisive moment from a dead-ball situation, showing how much small details matter when the margin for error is almost zero.

6. The pressure of expectation
Nigeria had qualified for every Women's World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. That incredible record also comes with enormous pressure. After the Cameroon defeat, some players reportedly struggled emotionally and even had difficulty eating the following day.

7. Africa has caught up
This may be the biggest long-term lesson. Nigeria can no longer rely on its historical dominance. South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, Cameroon and others have significantly improved. The competition is deeper, more organised and more professional than it used to be. Nigeria's old advantage is disappearing.

Now, what's the way forward, new coach or a rebuild?
