Last WAFCON, I covered the tournament entirely with my own funds. No brand support. No compensation. Just a commitment to telling the stories of African women’s football.
At the men’s AFCON in 2025, several brands reached out to work with me.
Now, as WAFCON 2026 begins, it’s the same story again. No brand partnerships.
I also choose not to work with betting companies, which naturally limits some sponsorship opportunities, but that’s a decision I’m comfortable with.
The cost of quality coverage doesn’t change because it’s women’s football. Flights, accommodation, transport, equipment, and internet aren’t cheap, just to name a few.

Ogun SWAN Re-elects Ogunsiji As Chairman, Demands Sports Masterplan, Calls For Night Economy In MKO Abiola Stadium
Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji has been re-elected as Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, pledging to consolidate on the achievements of his first term while calling on the Ogun State Government to adopt a comprehensive sports development agenda.
Speaking after his re-election at the 12th Ogun SWAN Triennial Delegates' Congress held on Saturday, Ogunsiji described his return for a second term without opposition as a vote of confidence in his administration and a renewed mandate to reposition the association.
He thanked members for the confidence reposed in him, promising an inclusive, transparent and people-centred leadership that would strengthen the association's programmes and promote grassroots sports development across the state.
"This mandate belongs to every member of our association. It is a renewed call to consolidate on our achievements, address our shortcomings and take Ogun SWAN to greater heights," he said.
Ogunsiji commended the electoral committee for conducting what he described as a peaceful, transparent and credible congress, while paying tribute to past chairmen for laying the foundation for the growth of the association.
He also passed a vote of confidence on the national leadership of SWAN under President Isaiah Benjamin, saying the current National Executive Committee had restored the association's relevance and dignity nationwide.
While acknowledging the Ogun State Government's investment in sporting infrastructure, particularly at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, the SWAN chairman expressed concern over poor maintenance and underutilisation of some facilities.
He lamented the deplorable condition of the stadium's swimming pool, describing it as overgrown with weeds and unsuitable for sports development.
Ogunsiji further criticised what he called the

Protocols.
Today, I stand before you with a heart filled with gratitude, humility and an even greater sense of responsibility. I am deeply honoured by the confidence you have reposed in me by returning me unopposed as Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter.
Your decision to entrust me with a second term without opposition is not merely an endorsement of my person; it is a resounding vote of confidence in the modest successes we have collectively recorded during our first term in office. I do not take this rare privilege for granted. Rather, I see it as a renewed call to duty—a call to consolidate on our achievements, correct our shortcomings and take Ogun SWAN to greater heights.
This mandate belongs to every member of our association. It belongs to those who believed in our vision from the beginning, those who supported our programmes and those who offered constructive criticism that helped us improve. I thank every delegate and every member for this overwhelming expression of trust.
I sincerely appreciate the Electoral Committee for conducting a peaceful, transparent and credible Delegates' Congress. By ensuring a seamless electoral process, you have once again strengthened the democratic tradition of our great association.
I also pay glowing tribute to our past chairmen whose sacrifices, guidance and unwavering commitment laid the foundation upon which we continue to build. Your contributions remain invaluable, and we shall continue to draw from your wealth of experience as we move Ogun SWAN forward.
Our profound appreciation goes to the National Executive Committee of SWAN under the purposeful leadership of Comrade Isaiah Benjamin for repositioning our great association and making SWAN more relevant among st
