MEDIA RELEASE - DTS Youth Development Pays Off in U21 Victory

- Risser Talks on Youth Experience Gap

Following their hard-fought victory at the Bank Windhoek Ramblers U21 Football Tournament, Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) is celebrating much more than just a trophy. For Head Coach Oliver Risser, the 1-0 final win validates the club’s intensive youth development strategy.

"The victory emphasizes the kind of work we do at DTS with the first team, the under-21s, and the rest of our youth academy," Risser explained. "We are open, and we want to develop."
Rather than fielding a standard U21 squad, DTS utilized the competition as a crucial bridge for emerging talent. The coaching staff blended 16-to-19-year-olds from the first team with academy prospects as young as 14.

Despite the mixed squad never training together prior to the four-day tournament, their adaptability came through."The longer the tournament went, the better the boys played," said Risser, adding that especially the final match demanded immense grit from the young squad.

“Obviously, the tournament was very tough. In the final during the first half the boys played really really well. In the second half they got a bit tired, but in the end we managed to win the final through a penalty,” said Risser.

For him, this tournament plays an important role in bridging the gap between academy and senior football. “The gap is just too big and when the kids finish the academy they struggle in senior football,” he said.

Looking ahead Risser said that " although we can say that we are proud, this is only the start of the journey."
