The Dust of the North West- written by Jaco Cromhout
The North West doesn’t welcome you.
It measures you.
The roads stretch towards the horizon in endless ribbons of gravel, daring you to believe the next rise is the last one. It never is.
By midday your legs are the colour of the earth. By sunset your bicycle is buried beneath a fine layer of red dust. By midnight even your thoughts seem coated in it.
Somewhere between Groot Marico and the next water point, you stop trying to stay clean.
You surrender.
And that is where the Munga Grit truly begins.
People often ask why anyone would willingly ride 450 kilometres through heat, dust, rocks, headwinds and sleep deprivation.
They’re asking the wrong question.
The better question is:
Why wouldn’t you?
Because there are experiences that cannot be bought, downloaded or explained. They have to be earned.
The Munga Grit is one of them.
The North West is hard country.

Nobody talks about this part.
The part where you are standing on the start line at Die Krip and everything is still possible. The suffering has not started yet. The doubt has not arrived yet. The legs are fresh and the road ahead is still just a number on a piece of paper.
457km. 50 hours.
In a few minutes that number becomes real. The North West gravel becomes real. The cold becomes real. And the question the Grit always asks becomes real.
But right now, in this moment, on this start line, everything is still possible. And that feeling. That exact feeling right there. Is why we come back every single time.

That is a wrap on the 2026 Alzu 100 Miler.
What a day. What a field. What a venue. The Mpumalanga farm roads showed up in full force today and so did every single rider on that start line. This community never stops amazing us.
Thank you to everyone who was part of it. Riders. Crew. Volunteers. Sponsors. Families. Farmers. Every single one of you made this weekend what it was.
The next 100 Miler Series race is the Magaliesburg 100 on 29 August. Entries are open now.

The finish line at Die Krip does not lie. Neither does the road that gets you there.

The Swords Series is not just for the riders.
On 26-27 September 2026 in Pretoria East the whole family comes along. Your crew is right there at transition every single lap cheering you through. And for the little ones there is a Kids Race for ages 3 to 9 because No Guts No Glory applies to everyone in the family.
A 24 hour loop race where every lap earns a stripe and every stripe earns a rank. Fast and flowing route. Family friendly from start to finish. The kind of race weekend where everyone goes home with a story.
