🧡 A Tiny Reef Resident with a Very Colourful Bed! 🐠
Meet this beautiful female Barred Triplefin, spotted during a dive with Aquaholics Barra in Mozambique. She was taking a well-earned rest on a rather unusual substrate — a patch of bright orange fish eggs! 🥚🧡

🤿 3 fun facts about Barred Triplefins:
1️⃣ They’re tiny! Triplefins are small reef fish, often only a few centimetres long, making them easy to miss unless you slow down and look closely.
2️⃣ Females can be beautifully marked too! While males often get more attention for their striking breeding colours, females have their own distinctive patterns and markings.
3️⃣ They love structure. Triplefins are usually found perched on rocks, corals and other reef surfaces, using their fins to grip the substrate while they watch the world go by — or, in this case, take a rest on a bed of fish eggs! 😍

Every dive in Barra, Mozambique brings the chance to discover something new when you take the time to look closely.

A breathtaking winter moment in Barra, Mozambique! 🐋💙

This incredible footage was captured this week by one of our guests from Barcelona during a whale watching trip with Aquaholics Barra. Every winter, humpback whales migrate to our coastline, and remarkably, many mothers give birth right here in the bay of Barra, making this one of the most magical wildlife experiences in Mozambique.

3 fun facts about humpback whales:

🐋 Mothers give birth in warm waters – Humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from colder feeding grounds to the warm waters of Barra, Mozambique, where they give birth and nurse their calves.

🎶 They are famous singers – Male humpback whales produce long, complex songs that can travel for many kilometres underwater and are believed to play a role in communication and mating.

💪 Newborn calves grow incredibly fast – A humpback calf can gain up to 45 kg (100 lbs) per day thanks to its mother’s rich milk, preparing it for the long migration ahead.

Seeing a mother and calf in the wild is a truly unforgettable experience and a reminder of how special our bay is during the winter whale season.

If you’re visiting Barra, Mozambique, join Aquaholics Barra for an unforgettable whale watching adventure or a diving trip. Contact us at [email protected] to book your next ocean experience!
