👁️ The fastest-growing sport in America just sent thousands to the ER with eye injuries.

Pickleball’s rise as America’s fastest-growing sport has come with an unexpected downside: a surge in serious eye injuries.

A new study published in JAMA Ophthalmology analyzed nearly 20 years of emergency room data and found that pickleball-related eye injuries have spiked dramatically—especially in the past year.

Of the estimated 3,100 reported injuries between 2005 and 2024, more than 40 percent occurred in 2024 alone. Most cases involved players aged 50 and older, with injuries ranging from corneal abrasions to orbital fractures and even ruptured eyeballs.

Experts say the sport’s smaller courts and faster-paced play increase the risk of close-range collisions and fast ball impacts. “People think of pickleball as safer than tennis,” said Dr. Matthew Gorski, “but a single hit to the eye can cause lasting damage.” The study also noted that many injuries involved first-time or casual players not wearing protective eyewear. As participation soars—growing from 3.5 million players in 2019 to nearly 20 million in 2024—doctors are urging the public to take safety more seriously. Without action, they warn, this beloved sport could leave a lasting mark on players’ vision.

比赛输了,怪队友不配合;

就算赢了,也会问自己哪里还能更好;

队友传球慢了一秒,就翻白眼;
伴侣失了一个分,就脸黑沉默;

你赢了比分,却输了朋友;
