Honda Ends Sponsorship with Team Liquid After Player Posts Atomic Bomb Image

Team Liquid’s Rainbow Six player Lucas “DiasLucasBr” Dias sparked outrage by posting a Hiroshima bombing GIF after losing to Japanese team CAG Osaka at a LAN event in Rio De Janeiro, prompting Honda to terminate its six-year sponsorship with the esports organization.

The insensitive post, which Dias claimed was an accidental result of searching for an explosion GIF to reflect his team’s defeat, led to widespread backlash from the Japanese esports community and fans globally.

Team Liquid issued a formal apology, fined Dias four months’ salary, mandated sensitivity training, and pledged to donate tournament winnings to charity as part of their accountability measures.

Despite these actions, some critics argue the punishment was too lenient, given the loss of a major sponsor and the deep cultural offense caused.
