good info
SSB (Single-Sideband) modulation can sometimes sound like a "duck voice" to new listeners because of a specific technical aspect of how it works.
A standard AM (Amplitude Modulation) signal is made up of three components: a central carrier wave, and two sidebands that carry the audio information. When you tune a regular AM radio, you're tuning to the carrier wave, and the radio uses that carrier to demodulate the signal and produce the sound.
SSB is designed to be much more efficient. To do this, it removes the carrier wave and one of the sidebands, transmitting only the single sideband that contains the audio information.
The receiving radio needs that carrier wave to be able to "unscramble" the audio. It does this by generating its own carrier wave, called the Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO), and mixing it with the incoming SSB signal. If the BFO is not perfectly tuned to the exact frequency where the original carrier would have been, the pitch of the recovered audio will be shifted.
This pitch shift is what creates that distorted, "duck-like" sound. It's a hallmark of a new operator or listener who hasn't yet fine-tuned their receiver.
