When we think of Nepal, we imagine snow-capped mountains, green forests and lush valleys.
But as we ride further north towards Upper Mustang, the landscape changes dramatically:
🌳 Less greenery
🪨 More rocks & dry terrain
🏜️ Brown, red & grey mountains
💨 Dry, dusty air
Why does a region in the middle of the Himalayas look like a desert?
👉 The answer: RAIN SHADOW.
🌧️ HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
• Moist monsoon air moves north from South Asia.
• The massive Himalayas force the air upwards.
• As the air rises, it cools and releases rain & snow on the southern slopes.
• By the time the air crosses the mountains, much of its moisture is gone.
• The northern side becomes extremely dry.
🏔️ THE NATURAL WALL
Two massive peaks play an important role in this region:
🏔️ Dhaulagiri I — 8,167 m
🏔️ Annapurna I — 8,091 m
These giant mountains create a natural barrier, leaving Mustang in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.

🛂 UPPER MUSTANG IS NO ORDINARY DESTINATION
* Unlike Kathmandu, Pokhara and other regular tourist areas, Upper Mustang is a Restricted Area.
* Foreign visitors entering Upper Mustang must obtain a special permit from the Department of Immigration, Nepal.
* The permit must be carried throughout the journey and may be checked by immigration or police officers.
* This special restriction makes Upper Mustang a very different experience from the usual tourist routes in Nepal.
📍 WHY IS UPPER MUSTANG RESTRICTED?
* Located in northern Nepal, close to the Tibet/China border.
* Its remote location, historical importance and unique cultural heritage make it a carefully controlled region.
* The landscape strongly resembles the Tibetan Plateau.
* Local communities, ancient monasteries, traditional villages and culture carry strong Tibetan influences.
* Much of its unique culture and way of life has remained remarkably well preserved.
🏔️ KAGBENI — THE GATEWAY TO UPPER MUSTANG
* Kagbeni holds a very special meaning in our journey.
* The Restricted Area begins north of Kagbeni, where the special permit becomes necessary.
* As we leave Kagbeni and ride further north, the scenery begins to transform dramatically.
* Expect:
* 🏜️ Arid Himalayan valleys
* 🪨 Dramatic rock cliffs
* 🌄 Deep canyons
* 🛣️ Dusty mountain trails
* 🏘️ Remote traditional villages
* From this point onwards, the journey starts to feel less like a normal motorcycle ride — and more like a true Himalayan expedition.

🏯 LO-MANTHANG — THE WALLED CITY OF THE HIMALAYAS
📍 WHERE IS LO-MANTHANG?
• Located in Upper Mustang, Northern Nepal, close to the Tibetan border.
• Altitude: approximately 3,800 metres above sea level.
• Situated in the rain-shadow zone of the Himalayas.
• Dry, rugged and dramatic landscapes — often resembling the Tibetan Plateau.
• Colourful cliffs, vast valleys and barren mountain terrain.
👑 FORMER CAPITAL OF THE KINGDOM OF LO
• Founded in the 14th century.
• Former centre of the ancient Kingdom of Lo.
• Its remote location helped preserve Tibetan culture and traditions for centuries.
• Tibetan language, traditional clothing, architecture and Buddhist practices remain deeply rooted here.
🧱 THE WALLED CITY
• The most iconic landmark is the Walled City of Lo-Manthang.
• Enter through the ancient city walls and discover:
• Narrow traditional streets
• Whitewashed houses
• Chortens & prayer wheels
• Historic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries
• Famous monasteries include Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa & C***e Gompa, known for their ancient murals and Buddhist artwork.
🏍️ WHY IS OUR JOURNEY SPECIAL?
• Lo-Manthang is not a destination reached by ordinary highways.
• We will ride through:
• Kali Gandaki Valley
• High mountain passes
• Rocky and dusty mountain roads

• And we will do it on the latest Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.
