An organisation committed to healthy oceans. There are some 3,600 km2 of reef around the country, including fringing reefs and offshore islands.

We create impact by partnering with local communities, government agencies and the private sector to protect and conserve marine ecosystems. Malaysia is part of the โ€œCoral Triangleโ€, the area of the worldโ€™s oceans recognized by scientists as having the highest biodiversity. Coral reefs therefore represent an economically important ecosystem and are the foundation of a significant percentage of the

Throughout May, a total of 352 kg of ghost nets was removed from several areas in Mersing waters, including Pulau Dayang, Pulau Aur, Pulau Mertang, Pulau Hujung, Pulau Tengah and Pulau Besar.

The number is significant, but what is harder to accept is the condition of the coral reefs that have had to bear the impact.

Underwater, an entangled net is not just โ€œwasteโ€. It can break coral structures, trap marine life, and slowly damage areas where fish breed, seek shelter and find food.

This activity is not only about the amount of net that was successfully removed. It reminds us that when coral reefs are affected, marine life and the communities who depend on marine resources are affected too.

Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved!

A big thank you to .conservationist for adopting a Fragment of Life through the Adopt seKarang programme! The coral fragment they have adopted has been safely tagged in Redang and we hope they continue to grow healthily ๐Ÿชธ

Your contribution not only help to support the conservation of our marine ecosystem but also the work of our CMCGs.

You can now adopt a coral in Redang or Semporna! Once youโ€™ve chosen your coral's location, our amazing Community Marine Conservation Groups (CMCGs) will plant it for you and keep you updated as it grows and thrives.

In Mantanani, the community quietly perseveres through our longest-running waste management programme.

Every day, waste is collected from household to household, sorted, and recyclables are sent for recycling.

Protecting our environment doesn't always require big, flashy commitments. More often than not, it's found in the small actions we take every day.

Almost 600kg marine debris cleared!

Together with , we successfully completed the Seri Buat Beach & Underwater Cleanup. Among the most commonly collected items were styrofoam and plastic bottles.

This cleanup highlights the power of multi-agency collaboration in protecting our marine ecosystems. It also reinforces the importance of empowering local communities to take stewardship of their environment and preventing marine debris from entering the ocean in the first place.

This initiative was carried out in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Tioman Development Authority (TDA), Pasukan Polis Marin, Agensi Penguatkuasaan Maritim Malaysia (Maritim Malaysia), Bahagian Perancang Ekonomi Negeri (BPEN), Majlis Daerah Rompin and Tioman Marine Conservation Group (TMCG).

In Pulau Aur, glass bottle waste collected from the village did not simply end up as rubbish. These bottles were cleaned, crushed, and mixed with cement to form reef rehabilitation structures.

The structures were then released into the sea as part of efforts to rehabilitate coral reef areas.

However, efforts like this would not have been possible without the strong support of the Pulau Aur villagers and volunteer divers, who worked together to make it happen from start to finish.

Our team from Reef Check Malaysia, together with IMB, recently conducted a coral bleaching monitoring survey at Pulau Udar, joined by Davies and Nicole from WCS.

The good news: less than 10% of corals (around 5โ€“6%) are currently showing signs of bleaching.

However, seawater temperatures remained at 31ยฐC throughout the diveโ€”warm enough to put continued stress on coral reefs. If these high temperatures persist, more corals could begin to bleach in the coming weeks.

Schools and students covered so this year we expanded our mangrove conservation efforts to include the Kampung Pasir Gogok community.

Together with community members, we established four mangrove nursery plots and planted 55 Rhizophora mucronata propagules. The enthusiasm shown by the participants reflected a shared responsibility towards protecting their coastal environment.

As part of the programme, we also installed a marine awareness signboard to highlight the unique marine ecosystems found in the area. We hope it will inspire greater awareness and appreciation among both residents and visitors.

Thank you to our representatives from Majlis Perbandaran Pengerang (MPP) and Pengerang Terminals Sdn. Bhd. (PITSB), and everyone who contributed their time, energy, and support towards this initiative. This is another small step towards building a community that values and protects their natural heritage

Over in Kunak, our team has identified 13 local youths who are highly motivated and committed to protecting their homes.

These youths received introductory training on marine conservation in Kunak to raise awareness and deepen their understanding of the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems. The programme also explored RCMโ€™s role and highlighted the importance of community involvement in marine conservation efforts.

The youths were introduced to basic marine resource mapping and briefed on the work plan for the newly established Kunak Darvel Marine Conservation Group ( ). The session concluded with a beach cleanup, marking their first mission in protecting their precious ocean.

Whatโ€™s next for these youths? As much of their work will involve underwater activities, they will undergo diving and EcoDiver training next.
