Why Drills Are More Important Than Just Playing in Pickleball
Let’s be honest—everyone loves playing games.
Scorekeeping, competition, bragging rights… it feels like progress.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
If you only play games, your improvement will be slow. Very slow.
⸻
🎯 Playing vs Drilling: What’s the Difference?
Playing Games
* Focus: winning points
* You repeat what you already know
* Mistakes get ignored or rushed
Drilling
* Focus: improving specific skills
* You isolate weaknesses
* You repeat the right technique over and over
In short:
Games test your level. Drills improve your level.
⸻
🧠 Why Drills Work Better
1. Repetition Builds Muscle Memory
In a game, you might hit:
* 5–10 d***s
* 3–5 drops
In drills?
You can hit 50–100 repetitions in minutes.
That’s how consistency is built—not by hoping the ball comes to you.
⸻
2. You Fix Weaknesses Faster
During games, what do players do?
Avoid their weak shots.
* Bad backhand? You run around it
* Poor drop shot? You stop using it
Drills force you to face it. Repeatedly. No escape.
⸻
3. Less Pressure, Better Learning
Games come with pressure:
* Score matters
* Ego kicks in
* Decision-making gets rushed
Drills remove that noise.
You can focus purely on technique, control, and feel.
⸻
4. Better Habits, Not Lucky Shots
In games, sometimes bad technique still wins points.
That’s dangerous.
Drills help you build:
* Proper footwork
* Correct paddle angle
* Controlled shot selection
Because consistency beats highlight plays every time.
⸻
⚠️ The Common Trap
“I’ll just improve by playing more.”
No, you won’t.
You’ll just get better at playing the same way… with the same mistakes.
⸻
🏓 The Ideal Approach
Not drills only. Not games only.
Balance both:
* 🔹 60% Drills
* 🔹 40% Games
Drill to improve.
Play to apply.
⸻
💡 Simple Drills You Can Start With
* Crosscourt d**k rally
* Third shot drop repetition
* Volley control at the kitchen
* Serve and return consistency
Nothing fancy. Just consistent work.
⸻
🏁 Final Thought
If you want to:
* Stop making the same errors
* Become more consistent
* Actually level up your game
Then you need to embrace drills—even if they’re less exciting.
Because in pickleball…
The players who improve fastest aren’t the ones who play the most.
They’re the ones who train the smartest.

Another state could be looking at making pickleball an official high school sport in the near future 🥒
Arizona schools are petitioning the Arizona Interscholastic Association to allow high schools to compete in pickleball just like other sports 👀
