For over 10 years I have been doing my best to educate myself about the science of hurricanes. I have found that Jeff Masters, formally of Weather Underground and now with Yale Climate Connections, is one of the best educators about hurricanes, their formation, tracking and the science of predicting their pending movements. I am infinitely grateful to have such a resource for learning. Check them out!

National Hurricane Center from NOAA

Hats off to the professionals who keep this site going. It is an invaluable resource for tracking hurricanes and for six months a year, I check it daily. Admittedly, there are some quirks to learn. I toggle between the 2 day to 7 day views to learn all that I can. I especially love to explore the archive section.

Did you know that hurricane/tropical storm activity on the Pacific side of Mexico can effect the our weather on the Caribbean side of Mexico?

Windguru - Mexico - Puerto Morelos Q.Roo 09/06/2026

With June being the first day of hurricane season and some inclement weather on the forecast this coming week, I thought I would share the best resources I have for watching the weather and learning more about the Atlantic hurricane phenomenon.

First site: wind guru. Yes, this is a site out of the Czech Republic. No, that bothers me not at all. Wind guru is a site designed for wind surfers, not scuba divers. So when they are happy and show 1-3 stars, we are not happy as that is often too much wind for diving. My favorite value to watch is the wave height prediction. In general, 1.2 meter waves is the limit for safe diving here in Puerto Morelos. I will add a graphic in the comments to indicate the wave heights.

Have you ever felt you were just minding your own business and you look up to be startled by someone else? Maybe you felt the need to just BUG-OUT and retreat? I think Sterling Tate was cool as a cucumber. Mr Nurse Shark on the other hand seems a bit jumpy. Thanks Selene for such a great series of photos!

Why is the beach in downtown Puerto Morelos nearly free from Sargasso, while Tulum and Playa del Carmen are inundated? The local barrier reef, that gives us such amazing snorkeling sites, is the reason. Last year, permanent Sargasso barriers were installed in Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and other cities too. The difference is, Puerto Morelos has lesser wave action at the Sargasso barrier because the waves have been tamped down by the coral reef barrier. Whereas, in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, the waves are stronger at the Sargasso barrier and the Sargasso can slop over the barrier more easily. The clean up of the Sargasso mess is a monumental effort! There are conveyor boats that vacuum it up when it reaches the barrier. The biggest job goes to the workers who rake the Sargasso from the waves onto the beach where the tractor can take it away. Bring them a cold drink when you see them!

It is lobster mating season! Here in the Caribbean, the spiny lobster breed during the spring time. From March 1st to July 1st it is prohibited to catch lobster. If you see lobster in restaurants, it was likely caught earlier and frozen.

It was November 2004 when I first went to this magical site. Just south of Tulum, Angelita is a cenote dive that will test your sense of reality. What your eyes see, your brain struggles to understand. Have you been to Angelita?

The weather forecast is looking rough for the next few days. Cenotes, the freshwater caverns of the Yucatan Peninsula, are an excellent diving option when we can't get out by boat. Have you been to cenotes before? Do you know where this is?
