Mighty Wanderers FC will face Tanzania’s Simba Sporting Club in the preliminary round of the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League following a draw conducted on Thursday afternoon in Cairo, Egypt.

The Nomads will start the campaign at home between 4 and 6 September before travelling to Tanzania for the second leg, scheduled between 11 and 13 September.

The winner between Wanderers and Simba will face the winner of the tie between 15 De Agosto and Fomboni De Moheli in the next round.

Goalkeeper Brighton Munthali has officially joined Tanzanian outfit Mbeya City FC from Malawi's Masters FC, bringing an end to his spell with the FDH Bank Premiership side.

The shot-stopper bid farewell to the club after his final training session, expressing appreciation to the management, technical panel, teammates and supporters for their unwavering support during his time at Masters FC.

"I would like to thank the management, coaches, my teammates and our supporters for the love and support they have shown me during my time at Masters FC. It has been a privilege to represent this great club, and I will always cherish the memories we have created together. I wish the team all the very best for the rest of the season and beyond," said Munthali.

Munthali leaves Masters FC after making six appearances in the FDH Bank Premiership this season. During that period, he registered two clean sheets and was named Player of the Match once for his impressive performances.

His move to Mbeya City FC marks the next chapter in his career as he embarks on a new challenge in Tanzanian football.

"We have prepared thoroughly for this game, and the players have responded positively throughout our training sessions. Everyone is eager to play, but only 11 can start, so we will field the team we believe gives us the best chance of winning," said Fazili.

The coach stressed that his side has no intention of settling for a draw despite knowing it would be enough to progress.

"Our objective is to win and keep another clean sheet. A draw would still be an acceptable outcome if things don't go according to plan, but our focus is on collecting all three points," he added.

Fazili believes securing a third straight victory would mark a memorable achievement for Malawi in their debut appearance at Africa's biggest women's football tournament.

"Winning all three group matches to finish on nine points would be a fantastic accomplishment for the team and for the country," he said.

The Scorchers have received a timely boost with the return of midfielder Asimenye Simwaka, whose presence has lifted spirits within the squad ahead of the crucial fixture.

"It is encouraging to have Asimenye back. Her return has strengthened the squad and given the players additional confidence," Fazili said.

However, Malawi will have to cope without defender Rose Alufandika, who is suspended after being sent off during the 3-1 victory over Egypt.

"We will certainly miss Rose, but we have capable replacements. The player coming in has experience in defence, so we are confident we can cope with her absence," explained the coach.

Morocco attempted to change penalty takers by handing the responsibility to Ghizlane Chebbak, but the referee ruled that the original taker, Mrabet, had to retake the kick.

Mighty Wanderers have secured a place in the 2026 Airtel Top 8 final after defeating Blue Eagles 5-4 in a dramatic penalty 3shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Silver Stadium on Sunday.

The victory sends the Nomads into the final, where they will take on Ekhaya FC, who booked their place a day earlier with a 2-1 victory over Karonga United.

Wanderers made the perfect start to the semi-final, taking the lead just four minutes into the contest. Lameck Mithi calmly converted from the penalty spot after the Nomads were awarded an early spot-kick.

Blue Eagles fought back and restored parity in the 27th minute when Godfrey Maluwa also scored from the penalty spot, ensuring the two sides went into the break level at 1-1.

The second half produced plenty of determination from both teams, but neither side was able to find the decisive goal despite making tactical adjustments and creating opportunities. As a result, the match was decided by penalties.

In the shootout, Blue Eagles' Francis Mcheka and Davie Phiri failed to convert their spot-kicks, while Wanderers' Sama Thierry Tanjong was the only Nomads player to miss. Defender Alex Kambirinya confidently slotted home the winning penalty to send Wanderers into the final.

Wanderers head coach Bob Mpinganjira applauded his players for their fighting spirit after guiding the club to another Airtel Top 8 final.

"The boys gave everything and played well. Unfortunately, penalties decided the outcome. We now shift our attention to the league and continue working hard," he said.

The result sets up an exciting Airtel Top 8 final between Mighty Wanderers, who are chasing a second title, and tournament debutants Ekhaya FC, who will be aiming to crown their remarkable campaign with silverware.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the preliminary-round draws for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will be conducted on Thursday, August 6, in Cairo, Egypt.

The draw will determine the opening-round fixtures for clubs set to compete in Africa's two premier interclub tournaments as they begin their quest for continental glory.

CAF has also maintained attractive prize money for both competitions. The winners of the CAF Champions League will receive US$6 million, while the champions of the CAF Confederation Cup will pocket US$4 million.

In addition, clubs that fail to progress beyond the preliminary stages will each be awarded US$100,000 in solidarity funding, a move aimed at easing the financial burden of participating in continental competitions.
