It depends on who you ask.
Walk along the shoreline of tiny Keyodhoo and sooner or later you’ll notice something unusual:
Nurse sharks are everywhere.
Not at one special tourist spot. Not just in one corner of the island. You can see them cruising through the crystal-clear shallows at different places around Keyodhoo — often together with rays and sea turtles.
And then there’s our little harbour…
On some days you can see 30 or 40 nurse sharks in this small area alone. Across the whole island, it sometimes feels like there must be around a hundred.
But why Keyodhoo?
Because this has always been a fishing island. 🎣🇲🇻
Long before guesthouses and tourism created another source of income for local families, fishing was at the heart of life on Keyodhoo.
Fishing boats came home with their catch. Fish were cleaned and processed around the harbour. Generation after generation, nurse sharks learned to live alongside this daily activity.
Today, this unusual relationship between fishermen, sharks and the ocean is simply part of Keyodhoo.
Visitors stop and stare.
For the people who grew up here, seeing nurse sharks cruising past the harbour wall is just another day at home. ❤️

When fly fishermen decide to pick up a popping rod...
Our guests from Argentina came to Keyodhoo mainly for fly fishing on the flats – but for one session, they decided to swap the fly rods for popping gear.
And the reefs didn't disappoint.
Several Giant Trevallies and a beautiful Bluefin Trevally made sure they got a proper taste of Maldives popping.
Different tackle.
Different technique.
Same addiction. 😄
That's one of the great things about fishing here – you don't have to choose just one style.

Every great tuna starts with the perfect bait…
Our day began by catching live Bonitos before heading offshore in search of giant Yellowfin Tuna.
It paid off!

A dream came true… from the deep blue. 🎣🔥
Our guests from China came to the Maldives with one mission: catch a Giant Pomfret.
This isn’t an everyday fish. Giant Pomfrets live 100m-700m deep water, and reaching them takes the right boat, experienced guides, quality tackle, and a perfect deep drop jigging setup.
We headed to the drop-off, dropped our jigs into the deep… and the action began!
The first runs were unbelievably powerful. One Pomfret hit so hard that it actually snapped one of the rods! But after an intense fight, our crew and guest worked together and successfully landed the fish.
The excitement didn’t stop there. More beautiful Giant Pomfrets followed, turning a unforgettable day.
This is why anglers travel thousands of miles to fish the Maldives.

Small bait. Big predators.
Livebait day with Eddie Egloff French group from Escape Fly Fishing
Using small baitfish of around 10 cm, the goal was simple:
Find feeding fish — and let nature do the work.
The result:
• multiple yellowfin tuna
• dogtooth tuna
• needlefish
• barracuda
Sometimes, the smallest bait attracts the biggest attention.
