Yan Snorkelling School

Proposing Snorkelling initiation and exploration with an educational approach. This includes learning basic swimming. Yan Snorkelling School offers :

Yan Snorkelling School has been created as an opportunity for Mauritians to discover and enjoy the wonderful marine life in its real and natural aspect and by that, build or improve the Mauritian's relationship with the sea and underwater world at different levels. Snorkelling initiations (includes basic swimming initiation)
Snorkelling initiations for those who never tried before, those who don’t

know how to swim, those who are uncomfortable in water and for those who have a deep fear of the sea or deep water (Thalassophobia). Every step is done smoothly and progressively in shallow water (where you can easily stand) accordingly with the needs of the person. For those who struggle with thalassophobia, Yan’s experience helps to overcome at least part of it which leads to a better feeling in the water. Basic swimming techniques can be taught for the apprentices who have no swimming skills. SAFETY FIRST! A snorkelling buoy is available.

2. Educational Snorkelling
Snorkelling is also about observation of interactions in a very dynamic ecosystem. Yan is always happy to share his knowledge about the different interconnectivity, species, behavior but also the threats and solutions. Identification sheets are available to put a name (English, French, Creole or Scientific) on the individuals previously observed.

3. Marine exploration
The most exciting thing when you already acquired the basic skills, is to go venture and explore for fascinating observations and discoveries. The sea, even in the lagoon, is a perfect place to train the eye and brain. Exploration is often followed by discussions on the observations and new ideas of exploration often rise from these exchanges. Snorkelling has these benefits :
- Learn more about the marine life and how to appreciate its beauty and by this understanding, learn to better respect this ecosystem
- Share with fellow islanders the love and joy of admiring our natural heritage (what is left) thus create positive emotions
- Build up confidence for those starting or facing their fears. It’s also a good practice of facing challenges.
- Learn basic swimming and get over thalassophobia (fear of the sea)
- Relieve yourself from stress as snorkelling can be an activity that can reach a meditation sensation
- Learn fascinating facts about the species and the ocean with the educational approach
- And of course, the physical part keeping in good shape (even if it is not intense sport)

Basic info :
- Sessions last approx. 1h
- For initiations : 1 to 2 persons max.
- Gears are provided
- Species Identification sheets are provided
- Underwater photos an option
- Most of the sessions are in Flic-en-flac (except on special request)

The price :
Rs600 / pers / session
Rs2500 for a 5 session package

Yan is an oceanographer who had the opportunity to work for different NGOs in Mauritius and in the Seychelles on scientific, educational and awareness projects regarding the marine environment and tropical wildlife. Yan is also an educator who, through his time spent with adults and kids on several projects, tried to contribute to a more sensitized society. Being a passionate of nature and marine world as well, he spends his free time in wildlife photography and further observation of “La Pachamama”.

Often, taking the time to observe, reveals a new world, a new understanding, a new feeling...

This is a Christmas tree tube worm (you see only its fans/gills as the worm is found inside the tube within this porites coral...) After having felt a presence and retracted itself instantly, with intense caution, it exposes its fans again to the world...

In this video, we can have the instructive approach, which acutally is my job, but sometimes we can also have the selfish approach... observe, silence, feel...

Nature is not only a world to understand but also a world to feel!

Our last boat trip in Mahebourg...

Different boat trips are proposed to apply what has been learnt during the sessions to enjoy a snorkelling with different sensations...

Feeling comfortable in deep water or even in shallow water has not been exposed to us all here in Mauritius... Thus fear of the sea has taken place for many of us.

That's why i do this job, to make us all islanders connect with the sea and with the marine world with safety as priority... step by step, we take what we once thought was not for us : Ease and happiness in the sea!

This is the last week before Winter Break! Seize the opportunity ;)

Hi all, some important news!

Next week’s Schedule and then : Winter Break!

As from 30th of June, Yan Snorkelling School will be in Winter break! 🥶🥶🥶

I will be away on a turtle (nesting and feeding monitoring) conservation mission in Madagascar for about 2 months.
🐢🥰🐢🥰🐢🥰🐢🥰🐢

I will be back mid-September, so you will have two and a half month to do all other activities and then, all back to snorkelling! 🥵🥵🥵

Next week (and last one before Winter Break) :

2 boat trips before the winter break on Saturday 27th June.

1 for beginners (Le Morne) 🤿🤿
1 for advanced snorkel divers (Riviere Noire reefs) 🤿🤿

If ever you cannot make it for this time, there will be more proposals and ideas as from September!

If you pay attention, oceanic life starts very close to us... Important to realise that we share some common space with our Neighbours in the marine world like this little guy, a juvenile Batfish, camouflaging as a falling leaf, dancing and guided by the water flow and waves on the shoreline...

Today is World Reef Awareness Day!

So let's talk a bit about the reef, right?

Reefs are built by corals, right? They represent less than 1% of ocean surface, yet they shelter 25% of all marine life... Intense and essential, right?

As islanders, do we have an impact on the reef health? Of course, right?

What's a lagoon? A body of water found between land and the reef, right?

Is it a recreational place for humans to enjoy or is it a nursery for many fish and other marine species? Both, right?

So let's enjoy the sea in a respectful way! Right?
- no pollution (plastic or other manmade stuff)
- apart from legal and ethical fishing, no touching or picking of anything (we could get hurt or damage ecosystem)
- no harassing of any life (We might disturb/scare/traumatise marine life)
- no feeding of whatsoever (as they have their own food in the sea)

We need to teach our kids and our grown ups that! Spread the word!
