HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT: MATTHEW ABELA MAKES MALTESE BADMINTON HISTORY! 🏆

🇲🇹 A Defining Moment for Maltese Badminton.

Matthew Abela has become the first Maltese player to win an official BWF International Series tournament in singles—and the first Maltese player to win an international tournament across all three categories: singles, doubles and mixed doubles 🇲🇹🏸

What an incredible achievement!

🏆🏆 TWO GOLD MEDALS & ONE SILVER IN BOLIVIA 🇧🇴

At the II Internacional Badminton Sucre Capital de Bolivia 2026, Matthew Abela and Gabriela Skorkowska reached the finals in two categories, finishing with an outstanding medal haul:

🥇 Matthew Abela – Men’s Singles Champion
🥇 Matthew Abela & Gabriela Skorkowska – Mixed Doubles Champions
🥈 Gabriela Skorkowska – Women’s Singles Runner-up

This historic victory makes Matthew the first Maltese player to win an official BWF International Series tournament in Men’s Singles.

But the success didn't stop there!

🥉 BRONZE MEDAL IN JAMAICA 🇯🇲

At the Jamaica International 2026, Matthew and Gabi produced another excellent performance, reaching the Mixed Doubles semi-finals.

In a thrilling 51-minute battle against a Jamaican pair, they narrowly lost the deciding third set: 19–21, 21–14, 21–23

Their outstanding run earned them a well-deserved 🥉 Bronze Medal.

Both Matthew and Gabi also reached the quarter-finals in Singles in Jamaica👏

From two golds and a silver in Bolivia to bronze in Jamaica, it has been an extraordinary international campaign for our two players!

Summer Training Camps Across Denmark, Italy & Spain 🇩🇰 🇮🇹 🇪🇸

Our La Salle members have been making the most of the summer, representing the club at international training camps in Denmark, Italy, and Spain and gaining valuable experience alongside young athletes and coaches from across Europe 🇲🇹

🇩🇰 Denmark | Badminton Europe Summer School
Monique Monika Vella, Emma Bartoli, and Julia Galea took part in the 2026 RSL Badminton Europe Summer School in Vejen, joining talented players from across Europe for a week packed with high-level training, learning, and personal development.

Emma Bartoli, Jade Bartoli, and Matthias Vassallo also travelled to Denmark to participate in the GSB International Training Camp in Greve, continuing their development in a challenging international environment.

🇮🇹 Italy | Bolzano Training Camp
A strong La Salle contingent; Julia Galea, Jade Fenech, Monique Monika Vella, Julia Saliba, Andrea Saliba, Julia Rose Attard, Ben Galea, Jack Galea, Dayle Bugelli, Luca Mascena, and Julian Zammit, took part in an intensive training camp in Bolzano, putting in hard work both on and off the court.

🇪🇸 Spain | Oviedo International Summer Camp
Emily Abela, accompanied by Coach Rodney, took part in the International Summer Camp in Oviedo, gaining further international exposure and experience.

Adding to the achievement, Coach Rodney has also been invited to coach at the same camp, a fantastic recognition of his expertise, dedication, and contribution to badminton at an international level.

We are incredibly proud of all our players and Coach Rodney for embracing these opportunities, challenging themselves, and continuing to grow through international competition and training 👏

Casaru & Gatt Making Malta Proud at the Irish Open! 🇲🇹🇮🇪 🏸

A fantastic international experience earlier this month for La Salle Club members, assisting coaches, and De La Salle College students Juan Casaru & Jeremy Mark Gatt, as they proudly represented Malta at the VICTOR U19 Irish Open 2026! 🇲🇹

Competing in both Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, the boys showed determination, fighting spirit and plenty of promise on the international stage 💪

Jeremy made an impressive run in the Men’s Singles, starting with a strong win over Spain’s Diego Arenas before defeating Ireland’s Robert Cowiman in convincing straight sets, 21–14, 21–10, to reach the Round of 32. His campaign continued with a thrilling three-set battle against Romania’s Maxim Iacob. After taking the opening set 21–17, Jeremy fought hard but narrowly fell in the next two, 17–21, 11–21. A brilliant effort right until the final rally! 👏💯

Juan faced a tough opening match in the Men’s Singles, but gained valuable experience competing at an international U19 event. Juan and Jeremy then joined forces in the Men’s Doubles, where they faced Ireland’s Conor Blakeman and Corey Chambers in another challenging encounter. Despite the result, the experience provided both players with important exposure to international competition.

Jeremy Gatt and Juan Casaru proudly represented Malta at the Dubrovnik Valamar Junior in Croatia last weekend.
