FIRST TECHNICAL SITE VISIT HELD FOR TRIATHLON AT THE 2027 COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES
The first official site visit in preparation for the Triathlon competition at the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games was successfully conducted recently in Marsalforn, Gozo, bringing together key representatives from Commonwealth Sport, World Triathlon, the Malta Olympic Committee, and the Malta Triathlon Federation.
The delegation included Warren Muscat, General Secretary of the Malta Triathlon Federation, Edith Degabriele, Technical Official, Charlene Attard, Director of Sport at the Malta Olympic Committee and representative of the Commonwealth Youth Games 2027 Local Organizing Committee, Sam Munkey, Head of Commonwealth Youth Games at Commonwealth Sport, and Richard Tarrega, Technical Director at World Triathlon.
The visit formed an important milestone in the planning process for the Games, providing an opportunity for all stakeholders to assess potential competition and operational venues, review technical requirements, and discuss the delivery of a world-class triathlon event in Malta.
Marsalforn, with its picturesque coastline, excellent water quality, and unique natural setting, was identified as a location offering a number of exciting possibilities for the staging of the triathlon competition. During the visit, extensive discussions were held regarding swimming, bike, and run course layouts, athlete flow, transition areas, spectator experience, safety considerations, broadcast opportunities, and logistical requirements.
Despite the limited time available, the delegation was able to cover a significant amount of ground and evaluated several innovative options that could contribute to creating an exceptional competition environment for the athletes and spectators alike. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that the event showcases both the sporting excellence of the Commonwealth Youth Games and the beauty of the Maltese Islands.
The collaboration between Commonwealth Sport, World Triathlon, the Malta Olympic Committee, and the Malta Triathlon Federation reflects a shared commitment to delivering a technically outstanding and memorable event that will leave a lasting legacy for triathlon in Malta and across the Commonwealth sporting community.
Commenting on the visit, Malta Triathlon Federation General Secretary Warren Muscat expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved, noting that the discussions were highly productive and demonstrated the tremendous potential available to host an exciting and challenging triathlon competition in 2027.
As preparations continue, further technical assessments and planning meetings will take place over the coming months as organizers work towards delivering a successful and unforgettable Triathlon event at the Commonwealth Youth Games Malta 2027.
An important outcome of the visit was the shared commitment to finalise the competition venue as early as possible. Establishing the venue well in advance will allow organisers to conduct two international test events during the first half of 2027. These events will serve as valuable opportunities to assess all operational, technical, and logistical aspects of the competition, while providing athletes, officials, and organisers with the chance to familiarise themselves with the course and venue setup ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Games, which will take place in October 2027. The test events will play a crucial role in ensuring that Malta delivers a safe, efficient, and world-class triathlon competition at the Games.
The Malta Triathlon Federation looks forward to continuing its close collaboration with all partners to ensure that athletes, officials, and visitors experience the very best that Malta and Gozo have to offer during the Games.
