Despite a busy summer of ambitious recruitment, Sliema Wanderers have suffered their second consecutive defeat of the 2026/27 VBET Malta Premier season.

The Wanderers lost 2-0 against reigning champions Floriana in the Old Firm Derby at the Centenary Stadium. 🏟️

⚽ Dunstan Vella opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a precise low finish from the edge of the penalty area.

⚽ Paul Mbong sealed Floriana’s victory from the penalty spot in the 74th minute following an FVS review.

Sliema had earlier seen a goal disallowed for a foul inside the penalty area, but they were ultimately unable to find a way past Floriana’s defence.

After also losing their opening match 2-0 against Hibernians, Sliema remain without a point or a goal after 180 minutes of league football:

The season is still young, but expectations are high following the club’s major squad rebuild. Branko Nišević and his players must now respond quickly and begin turning their investment into results. ⚠️

Ester Tamasi, Italy Director of the Malta Tourism Authority, welcomed the partnership and highlighted football’s ability to create relationships, promote destinations and bring communities together. ⚽️

Founded in 1907, SPAL is a name rich in Italian football history, having spent several seasons in Serie A. The club is now beginning an ambitious new chapter under Maltese ownership, with the objective of rebuilding and returning to higher levels. 📈🔥

The 31-year-old forward arrives following a spell with Eastern District in Hong Kong, where he scored four goals in 17 Premier League appearances during the 2025/26 season. 🔥

🌍 Yuel brings considerable international experience to Malta, having previously played across Australia, Iran, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Libya and Hong Kong.

The 19-year-old Ivorian joins the Saints on loan from Turkish club Göztepe S.K. for the 2026/27 season, with the agreement running until June 2027. 🤝

Born in Abobo, Abidjan, Gouhon developed within Göztepe’s youth setup and gained experience competing in Turkey’s U19 Süper Lig. 🇹🇷⚽

Primarily a central midfielder, the youngster can also operate in attacking and defensive midfield roles, giving coach Gilbert Agius additional flexibility in the middle of the pitch. 💪🔥

Ħamrun Spartans have strengthened their attacking department with the signing of experienced Italian centre-forward Marcello Trotta.

The 33-year-old arrives in Malta following a career that has taken him across Italy, England and Portugal. 🌍⚽

Trotta featured in Serie A with Sassuolo and Crotone, while also representing clubs including Avellino, Frosinone, Ascoli, Cosenza and Triestina. His most recent experience came with Sora in Italy.

🏴 In England, Trotta made his Premier League debut with Fulham and enjoyed productive spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Brentford. He scored 13 goals during Brentford’s successful 2013/14 promotion campaign.

🇵🇹 He also gained experience in Portugal with Famalicão, while at international level he represented Italy from U16 through to U21 level. 🇮🇹

Standing at 1.88 metres, the left-footed striker brings physical presence, valuable experience and another important option to the Spartans’ attack ahead of the new league season. 💪🔥

Malta’s young sailors delivered the country’s best-ever results at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships, producing a memorable campaign against some of the finest youth sailors in the world! 🌍👏

Held in Aarhus, Denmark, from 11–19 August, the championship attracted 429 sailors from 45 nations. The competitors faced demanding conditions, including shifting winds of between 8 and 25 knots, powerful westerlies and temperatures below 17°C. 🌬️🌊

🌟 Katrina Micallef led Malta’s challenge with an outstanding 8th-place finish among 122 sailors in the Women’s fleet, earning a place inside the World Top 10! She also received a special recognition plaque presented by Danish sailing legend and three-time Olympic medallist Anne-Marie Rindom. 🏅

💪 Jonas Micallef secured an impressive 27th place overall in a highly competitive Men’s fleet featuring 307 sailors.

👏 Kaine Muscat continued his promising development by finishing 19th in the U17 category while competing in the Silver Fleet. This followed his 12th-place U17 result at the European Championships earlier this summer.

This was only the second time Malta had been represented at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships, making these achievements even more special. 🇲🇹❤️
