My uncle Ray raised me after my parents died in a crash when I was four, an accident that also left me unable to walk. When the state considered foster care, he stepped in without hesitation.
“I’m taking her,” he told them. “She’s my niece.”
For twenty-two years, Ray was my whole world. He adapted his life around mine, pushed my wheelchair everywhere, and always made me feel seen and loved.
When he became ill, his health declined quickly, and he eventually passed away under hospice care.
Three days after his funeral, our neighbor gave me an envelope he had left behind. Inside was a letter in his handwriting that began with: “I’ve been lying to you your whole life.
