In 1986, 23 pioneers set off into the Moroccan Sahara for the very first Marathon des Sables.

In 2026, 1,500 participants took on the MDS Legendary, 40 years after the adventure began.

A lot has changed since those first steps in the desert. The number of participants, the race, the stories…

But the essence remains the same: coming to the Sahara to challenge yourself, push your limits and experience something you’ll never forget.

From 23 pioneers to 1,500 adventurers.

On April 6, 2026, participants lined up for the start of Stage 2, taking on 40.5 km through the heart of the desert.

The first 35km of the 40th edition of the MDS Legendary set the tone for an extraordinary adventure.

From the first steps into the desert to the final meters, every moment was a mix of effort, heat, determination and pure emotion.
