Escaping zip ties with your hands restrained behind your back is a completely different problem.

Limited visibility. Restricted movement. Difficult access. Awkward body positioning. And significantly less control over what you’re doing.

That’s exactly why restraint-escape training has to include different positions, limitations and circumstances.

Here, I’m demonstrating the shoelace friction method with the hands restrained behind the back.

Is it fast? Not necessarily.

And it doesn’t have to be.

The important question is not simply “How fast can I get out?”

It is whether you have the knowledge, opportunity and ability to create an escape when circumstances allow it.

This technique will not fit every situation. Nothing will.

It is one tool, for one specific problem, within a much broader restraint-escape framework.

The objective is not to learn a trick.

The objective is to build options.

Tour du Mont Blanc.

Days on the trail, moving through three countries and some of the most impressive landscapes in the Alps.

Long climbs, changing weather, tired legs, simple camps and the kind of views that make you stop for a moment and just take it all in.

Some experiences don’t need much explanation. They just need to be lived.

Training for situations we hope never happen.

Close-range threats, sudden attacks, weapons, pressure, limited reaction time and difficult decisions.

The purpose of this type of training is not to predict exactly how a confrontation will happen. It is to develop the ability to react, adapt and make decisions when the situation changes fast.

Because in a real confrontation, you don’t choose the scenario.

You prepare for it.

Some places never stop impressing you.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the world’s most iconic long-distance trails, crossing France, Italy and Switzerland through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Alps.

Every time we return, the experience is different. Different conditions, different challenges, different people and different moments. The route may be familiar, but the mountains never feel the same.

This summer, Delta Survival School is back on the TMB, and we have now crossed into Italy 🇮🇹, heading towards Courmayeur.

For us, experiences like this are about much more than covering kilometres. They are about being outdoors, moving through changing environments, adapting to the conditions, sharing the journey and simply experiencing what the mountains have to offer.

If you love the outdoors, the Tour du Mont Blanc is one of those journeys that deserves a place on your list.

At least once in a lifetime, walk the TMB.

This is not “the way” to escape zip ties. It is one situation, one restraint position, and one skill within a much larger framework.

Yes, in many real-world abduction scenarios, restraints may be applied behind the back or in other positions that make escape significantly more difficult.

But training has to start somewhere.

You don’t begin with the most complex scenario. You first learn the mechanics under controlled conditions, understand why the method works, and then progressively introduce harder variables: different restraint positions, limited movement, stress, time pressure, reduced access to tools, and other complications.

This shoelace method is one of those foundational lessons for a situation where the hands are restrained in front.

It was also one of the first restraint-escape methods I was taught during my military training before progressing to more difficult problems.

The objective is not to memorize one “trick.”

It is to understand the principles, develop problem-solving capability, and then learn to apply them across different scenarios.

Train the principle. Then increase the problem.

A knife is dangerous. Techniques do not always work. The best thing is to run. We know. We teach exactly that on the first day.

But awareness has a limit. Sometimes you are trapped, ambushed, or protecting someone, and running is no longer an option. That is the moment we train for.

No perfect technique. No blue pills. You may get cut. We accept that from the start, and we train you to read the attack, adapt, and keep functioning until you are out.

That is survival mindset. Not a phrase that sounds serious. A trained response.

Before you say “just run,” understand what we actually train.

Using this technique can finish fight in seconds!
But it’s only works when you are situationally aware!
Doesn’t mater whether you are man or women, it’s still efficient if it trained and practiced!
are your thoughts ?

How you position your hands when the tape goes on determines how much slack space you’ll have to work with later. Make a fist or push your elbows out as it’s applied. That small choice makes the difference.

Before you break the tape, weaken it first. Use your teeth to start a tear. Duct tape is a type of plastic, so friction against a wall works the same way and loosens it further.

Once it’s loosened, break it explosively using your body, not just your arms. Drive down against your stomach to snap it free.
