🐆 LEOPARDS
National Parks have the world's highest density of (estimated) 21.7 leopards per 100 km², including 12.1 resident adults per 100 km² in Yala. And the highlands aren't left out. Horton Plains has recorded an estimated 13.4 larger Highland leopards per 100 km². Then there are the 🐘, 🐃, 🐻, 🦌 and many more.
🦅 BIRDS
Sri Lanka's current bird records include 439 species- 236 residents and 203 migrants including 33 endemics. In Mannar, winter can bring thousands of Greater Flamingos to the lagoons and wetlands.
🌿 THE MOUNTAINS
Nuwara Eliya is roughly 180 km from Colombo, rising to around 1,900–2,000m. Nearly 500,000 acres of tea estates create opportunities for landscapes, environmental portraits, workers, mist, forests and mountain light.
💧 WATERFALLS
Sri Lanka has around 350 named waterfalls, another completely different photographic environment.
🪨 HISTORY IN STONE
More than 2,500 years of civilisation have left ancient cities, stupas, temples, reservoirs and monumental stone architecture. Sri Lanka has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites- 6 cultural and 2 natural.
🎭 PEOPLE & CULTURE
And then there is the photography that cannot be planned quite so easily. markets, villages, everyday life and major cultural events such as the Kandy Randoli Perahera, with elephants, dancers, drummers, fire, colour and movement creating an entirely different challenge for the photographer.

WORLD WAR WRECKS | SRI LANKA

We often talk about Sri Lanka's wrecks as dive sites.

But some of them are much more than that.

They are the remains of ships caught in two world wars from the 40m SS Perseus, sunk during WWI, to the 57m SS Worcestershire, and the WWII wrecks scattered along the eastern coast, including HMS Hermes, HMS Hollyhock, RFA Athelstane and SS British Sergeant.

And perhaps what makes Sri Lanka particularly interesting for experienced wreck divers is the range.

THE VVIP CAR WRECK- NEGOMBO

An LTTE A522 was captured by the Sri Lankan Navy during the final stages of the war and deliberately sunk off Negombo in 2018, together with eight decommissioned bullet-proof vehicles used by those who were at the top of our political echelons.

What began as steel has become a living reef.

Squid eggs, fish and coral have progressively transformed the site, while the vehicles remain remarkably recognisable possibly due to their thick steel armour.

Dive profile: 17–27 m | West Coast season: Oct–Apr | Nitrox suitable | Single dive | Excellent for underwater photography.

A fascinating intersection of history, security, engineering and marine ecology, all on one dive.

WRECK FILES | SS RANGOON

The wreck you can hear.

Just outside Sri Lanka's Galle Harbour lies the SS Rangoon, a 60-metre P&O steamship built in London in 1863.

She sank in 1871 after striking Kadir Rock while leaving Galle. Today she rests upright on the seabed at around 30–32 metres, where more than 150 years underwater have transformed the wreck into a thriving marine habitat.

And then there are the fish.

Schools of grunts and snappers have made the wreck their home. Get close enough and you may even hear the characteristic sounds produced by grunts underwater.

WEST & SOUTH COAST DIVING -WHERE SHOULD YOU GO?

Instead of a generic guide, here are a few key facts to help you choose the right side of the island and the right dive for you.

The season runs 1 October to mid-April, but conditions are most reliable from February to March. Especially visibility and current.

COLOMBO

Best for advanced and deep divers.

Mostly wrecks between 30–40m, plus a few deeper sites. This is Sri Lanka’s main hub for serious recreational wreck diving and a stepping stone into technical diving.

HIKKADUWA

Reefs, sandstone, and rocky sites along the coast.

Includes the first major wreck and a deep rock formation around 40m. Good diving, but visibility can vary.

GALLE

Two solid wrecks and reefs in the 20–30m range. Ideal for certified divers wanting more than shallow reef dives.

UNAWATUNA

Best for DSD and beginners.

Not suited for advanced divers looking for serious depth or wrecks.

NEGOMBO

Surprisingly diverse diving from 0–30m with reefs and rock formations.

Also home to Sri Lanka’s only purpose-sunk wreck with VVIP cars.

KALPITIYA

Reefs and rock formations, but far from Colombo.

For deeper diving, Colombo is usually the better option. Occasionally, you may still spot a Napoleon wrasse here.

GREAT BASSES — MARCH

Shallow but challenging due to surge, current, and rugged sandstone walls.

Exceptional visibility and unique marine life make it a standout seasonal dive.

TECHNICAL DIVING

Limited but notable:

Worcestershire - 58m
MV Tricolor - 64m
Perseas - 40m (large, complex structure)

For tech divers, these are the key sites.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Sri Lanka isn’t one dive destination.

The average traveler leaves Sri Lanka thinking the diving is just shallow bays. They completely miss the world-class steel resting right outside Colombo.
This is the massive twin propeller setup of the Nilgiri (often called "The Trug"), a powerful utility harbor tugboat that went down during a storm in 1997. Today, it rests completely upside down at 32 meters. Because of its unique inverted position, it forms a massive, dramatic cavern underneath the deck where massive lionfish gather to shadow underwater photographers.

🌊 Wreck Wednesday | Cargo Wreck | Colombo | Sri Lanka

Lying between 28 and 32 metres, the Cargo Wreck is one of Colombo's most popular recreational wreck dives,and for good reason.
Resting on her starboard side, she offers completely different diving experience from an upright wreck, with fascinating swim-throughs, abundant marine life and a layout that keeps divers coming back time and time again.
Discovered by Yohan Abeyesekera, the Cargo Wreck has earned a reputation as one of Colombo's best night dives. As daylight fades, the wreck transforms into a completely different underwater world.
For many years, the wreck was also famous as the home of "Big G"-an enormous giant grouper that became something of a legend among Colombo divers. Although Big G hasn't been reliably sighted in recent years, divers still occasionally arrive to find large clouds of silt hanging over the wreck...
