Galle District Chess Championship 2026

Dear Galle District players, parents, coaches and chess enthusiasts,

The Galle District Chess Association wishes to provide an important update regarding the Galle District Chess Championship 2026.

Following the postponement of the first stage of this year’s championship, the Zonal Events due to circumstances beyond the control of the Organizing Committee, we have been working continuously to resolve the issues and create the necessary conditions to resume the championship.

During this period, we held several important discussions with government officials and other stakeholders, with the interests of the Galle District chess community as our priority.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who came forward to support the efforts to resolve these matters. In particular, we extend our gratitude to Professor Susiripala Manawadu, Governor of the Southern Province, and his office; Lanka Chess Protectors & Developers; officials of the Department of Education – Southern Province; parents; and all other stakeholders who supported this process.

♟️ Another Important Step Forward – Second and Final Stages to be FIDE Rated

We are also pleased to announce another significant development for the Galle District Chess Championship 2026.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka has accepted our request to make the second and final stage of the championship FIDE rated.

Accordingly, the Second and Final Stage of the Galle District Chess Championship 2026 will be FIDE rated, adding further quality, recognition and competitive value to our premier district championship.

This is part of our continuing effort to provide higher-quality tournaments and better competitive opportunities for chess players throughout the Galle District.

🏆 Championship Resumes – Zonal Events on 19 & 20 September

We are pleased to officially inform the Galle District chess community that we are now in a position to resume the Galle District Chess Championship 2026.

The first stage will consist of four zonal events:

♟️ Ambalangoda Zonal
♟️ Elpitiya Zonal
♟️ Udugama Zonal

Further information regarding venues, registration, schedules and tournament arrangements will be announced shortly.

Our efforts throughout this process have been guided by one objective to deliver the best possible quality of chess events and opportunities for the players of Galle District.

✔️ Prize money will be awarded only after the Fair Play verification process.
✔️ Players identified for cheating or unfair play will be immediately disqualified.
❌ No certificates or prize money will be awarded to banned/disqualified players.
