Four things every pro does that nobody ever taught you — and they’ve got nothing to do with talent. One: they’re fully turned with the racquet back before the ball bounces on their side. Early, every time. Two: their legs are set and balanced before they swing. You can’t time the ball or use the ground if you’re still moving. Three: 100% racquet speed. A full, committed swing on every ball — offense or defense. Hesitation is what kills the shot. Four: the legs drive every shot, with the right stance for each one. The arm doesn’t make the power. I used to believe that simply sharing a court with stronger player would make me better. I was working hard, but I wasn’t working on the right things. Instead of expressing my weaknesses, I was hiding them. Instead of practicing the shots I needed most, I played the shots I felt comfortable with. I was trying to impress, rather than improve. This is one of the biggest ideas behind deliberate practice. Improvement doesn’t come only from the effort. It comes from directing that effort into the things that will really impact performance.
