The Kittiwake has a story to tell.
Most divers know the USS Kittiwake as one of Grand Cayman’s iconic wreck dives. But before she became an artificial reef off Seven Mile Beach, she spent nearly 50 years serving the U.S. Navy as a submarine rescue vessel during the Cold War.
In this episode of DiveSAGA, Nick Derutter travels to Grand Cayman with Divetech and local wreck expert Stephen Aynsley to explore the Kittiwake and uncover the fascinating story behind the ship.
From diving bells and massive salvage pontoons to compressed gas systems, hyperbaric chambers and submarine rescue equipment, the wreck offers a unique glimpse into a very different era of diving and naval technology.
